Mudhugger/Mudrocker and seat stay angles

I've been planning to buy a rear Mudhugger this Autumn, just about to hit the button and realised the medium and large are actually seat stay angle dependent.

My bike is a steel hardtail and the angle is about 45°, much steeper than either of the 29" guards.  I'm thinking that will result in a very droopy guard.

Looked at the competing Mudrocker and that says it's adjustable, but at a glance it just looks like a flip flop style rubber shim so likely to still be suited towards the very shallow stays you get on full sussers.

Will either of them do a decent job or should I be looking at others? I have an old crud catcher but I was intending to find something with better coverage including down the back of the seat tube, what else is there?

Thanks

Muckynutz do a mudhugger style one but the angle is adjustable. I've got one and it seems decent so far. The contact points are rubber rather than hard plastic which should help reduce wear through tape and paint.

Muddhugger have various versions including different angles.  I run them on hardtails no issue

I've also got a gen1 and latest versions of mudhugger and they've fitted every bike I've had. I suspect you'd be fine with MH.

This is a current model mk2 medium on a 29er with seatstay 42deg above horizontal. I can't see why it wouldn't work on 45 deg (the radius would still follow the tyre).

The seat stay angle on my hardtail (XL 29er) is 48 degrees.

I have the old 26inch Mudhugger and it's just long enough to work.

If you don't fancy the gamble on the cheap option, just get the medium MK2. It will be fine.

Mickr saved me the trouble of posting a pic of a medium Mudhugger on a 29er hardtail with a similar angle seatstay (and paint job). I did try re-using my old 26er Mudhugger but found it didn't give quite enough coverage. I do find the new mudguard design's forward extension clip dumps mud onto the bottom bracket area; keep meaning to take it off (probably more useful for protecting shocks on FS frames).

Thanks guys, I wonder why they restrict the specified angle so much when they clearly do fit steeper seat seats!?

I had the MuckyNutz one and it fell to bits on the first descent I did, despite being installed correctly.

They admitted that it was a design fault with the retention disc that set the angles and refunded me.

I wouldn’t recommend for anything more than very gentle riding.

Just about to go and try a Mudrocker and see if it’s any better.

Yes I was seriously considering that one, but the reports of plugs coming out has stalled that one.

Turns out a friend has a mudhugger medium so I'll probably wait to see how that fits on the bike, from the pics above it looks like it will work 🙂

The Mudrocker seems like a well thought out bit of kit. Just been and done my local loop with some 2’ drops, slight technical sections and one OTB! It’s stayed solidly in place too.

At first I thought it wouldn’t fit, but actually the rubber wedges do give enough adjustability that it fits well.

So far I’d recommend.

Avoid the Zefal one, it’s made of cheese.
