Mudguards to a CX frame

I have a lovely comfortable CX frame, that id like to use as my winter road bike. I will need to fit mudguards.

The bike has CX V brakes.

The front fork has no eyelets and being canti specific, there is no mount in the fork arch.

The rear has wishbone style seat stays. There is no mount there. There is a chain stay bridge, but its a long way forward of the rear tyre. The D/S seatstay has welded cable stops and the rear gear cable inner runs down the top of this stay until about 100mm from the dropout.

Am i going to be able to get/adapt/bodge mudguards to fit? What would STW do?

Thanks

Ian

SKS Speedrocker. That's what I use on my CX/Gravel bike (that has no mudguard mounting points).

Depends how 'permanant' you want them to be (once set up, they're very quick and easy to take off and put back on again), and whether you're looking for full-roadie coverage (they're good enough riding solo off road, but would not be great on full on wet club road rides)

I used the SKS Raceblades. Very similar to the ones HTO mentions, but they (Raceblades) don't look like they offer as much cover from spray coming off the top of the front wheel. I think I used one of those neoprene gaiter things for that

These kind of clips will allow you to fit regular guards, at least where the stays would normally be positioned:

You'd probably need to have a play with mounting behind the brakes still though.

Avoid raceblades and similar 'race bike guards' as they won't last and barely offer much coverage

Raceblades dont fit due to the exposed gear cable inner running down the seat stay. It makes any seat stay attachment v tricky

I have used PDW eyelet mounts which fit over the skewer and appear to be quite reliable in use. We have used these on two old mtbs which have been riden in winter with full SKS mudguards.

I got mine from SJS cycles.

Could you use an adapted fork bung under the fork crown?

The fork is 1 piece carbon with no steerer hole on the underside.

The mount through the skewer sounds a good shout. Maybe super Velcro on the fork crown??

SKS Veloflex or Velo 55 should fit although you may have to cable tie any guard onto the top of the wishbone seat stay or modify the bridge to only wrap round one side if it interferes with cables. P clips at the bottom of the seat stays should fit below the lower gear cable stop OK.
Again not group ride coverage but work well for commuting, forestry tracks, etc.

I always worry about the fork crown mount as any failure can result in an over the bars accident.

If you use velcro is it worth adding a couple of zip ties as fail safe?

+1 for Speedrockers.

Very happy with mine. Bought for road/gravel bike because they're easily removable to fit gravel tyres in. Except it turns out they have enough clearance to run my gravel wheels anyway, so they just stay on.

I find them just as good for road duties as the Chromoplastics they replaced. The rear extension is expensive for what it is great for really wet road rides, but stays off most of the time so you don't have the faff of a full length guard for storage, etc.

OP
I love a set of homemade/bodged guards me 😆 🤣

Do you need full mudguards or spray catchers, and do they need to go off and on easily?
I have ran a lot of CX frames as winter/commuter bikes with crud catchers on the front(forks and downtube),then a 45mm wide stripe polycarb fixed on the back with mixture of P-clips and zipties.
For the frames with a wishbone stay,I pop riveted on a long piece of alloy angle, then ziptied it on to the frame with tape/rubber underneath.

Ass saver win wing is the only one that will fit my cross bike. No brake bridge, cantisbto interfere with clip on sks. Fortunately it works well.

Super velcro under the fork crown works well. If it fails all that happens is the guard sits on the wheel.

Since you have cantis, you most likely have QRs too like mine. The other alternative, which I have not tried, is the quick guard. Nice idea, not sure whether it will slip.

I like this design and there was a lighter carbon rear blade that used to do the same. Bit the win wing is excellent.
