Hi, I was thinking of taking a ride near where there might be some mud, can anyone report on the condition of the mud please?
I've heard there might also be some muddy water and some fallen leaves and acorns near where I'l be riding, will these adversely affect my ride?

Thanks all.

If you or your bike get muddy you'll die. Fact.

you can let other people know if its rideable on calderdaletrails or KOP though when you do find that mud 🙂

I can confirm that locally, adverse weather conditions have affected trails.Mainly confined to the combination of outdoor based trails comprised of compacted earth or aggregates and the H2O based precipitation that is somewhat prevalent at this time of year.Bitumen or concrete based trails continue to be unaffected, especially where there has not been an abundance of moisture.Or they are indoors.

My trails are liberally daubed with mud, wet leaves and equine and canine excretions.

What tyres for maximum grip on a turd-rich surface?

These should not adversely affect your ride, as surely you have your manservant run ahead to clear the trail and lay carpet over any damp sections.

I would expect a decent servant to lay in the muddy parts so as to allow a gentleman to ride over them thus preventing mud contamination.

I rode my CX bike last night in expectation of mud, there was in fact minimal mud evident, probably because I rode it where there were no other tyre tracks 😯

I can confirm that the muddy trails round here are mostly mud free and the acorns, chestnuts, pinecones, beach nuts, and everything else making the trails slippery are just about gone too.

Making the most of the last couple of weeks before it all turns to slop again!

What??? Is a mountain bike not supposed to be replaced with a steel-framed winter road bike as soon as there is the slightest chance of mud?

Which is a weird thought, as most roadies who occasionally MTB (as opposed to the other way arround) seem to give up for the winter and ride MTB's. I guess it depends which one you view as your best bike, an which you're prepared to subject to road filth or mud.

But surely that's because in summer there's enjoyment to be had on a mountain bike, no?

All above posts reported for use of such a generic term 'mud'. When we regularly discuss appropriate tyre compounds, sizes, treads etc we should surely be more specific in teh conditions for use as well?

As an example, I recently undertook the following investigation of some 'mud':

My investigation comprised two cable percussion boreholes advanced to a maximum depth of 30.00m below ground level (bgl). Standard penetration testing (SPT) was undertaken throughout the depth of each borehole and two groundwater/gas monitoring wells were installed. Five machine dug pits were excavated, three refusing on concrete at depths between 1.20m and 1.30m bgl and two completed to a depths of 1.20m bgl and 3.00m bgl. A further two locations intended for cable percussion boreholes, terminated on concrete at a depths of 3.00m and 1.20m bgl.

River terrace Deposits were present beneath the Made Ground, overlying the Wittering Formation.

Contaminants of concern were not detected within soil sampled until I stopped for a pee on the way back from the pub.

@40mpg hope you peed onto a firm surface and not anything soil based that would instantly turn to mud.

If this so-called "Summer" is anything to go by, it is every bit as Muddy as Winter, or worse. At least in Winter a mud free ride can happen if it freezes.

This Summer has been hell on earth on the bike I've done rides and it has been a joke the mud just ruining everything. I am going to book a biking holiday in Spain just to get a bit of mud free riding because ever since the shit weather we've been having since Late July there has been none of it!

"Welcome to the U.K. We have six months of shite weather every year, then it's winter".

Only kidding really. I quite like it getting all slippy again in the autumn, then it's crimbo and after that the determination to ride more in the new year. It only gets tedious for me around February, so then only hopefully a couple of months and the dust returns.....
