for the first time ever

it's 12 speed with absolute black oval chain ring, chain is well within spec. When I cleaned everything up with a clump of grass it was okay again

time for a chain guide?

any ideas

thanks

if it's an NX mech it's probably that, they are nearly as bad as apex

I run 1x11 on both my bikes, clutch mechs and n/w chainrings, but still run a chain guide. It stops things going wrong if things are a bit worn, but it does allow me to neglect the drivetrain too much sometimes.

This chainguide is excellent.

Check you have not bent a tooth, a mm or so will start throwing the chain especially towards the end of cassette range.

That said I usually run a chain guide, though getting one to fit an oval would be more difficult.

Most likely just a bit of mud or grease gumming up the N/W tooth profile, the chain will ride off with a pretty minimal amount of gunge on there clutch mech or not...

Some chainrings don't shed mud well, especially if there is a 'shelf' under the narrow tooth. Some AB chainrings didn't use to play well with KMC chains. This may be fixed now but for a while AB were blaming KMC for producing out-of-spec chains, although other chainrings were fine with them. Is the chainring worn?

Anyway - lots of potential factors. So yes, run a top guide to mitigate all this.

I've found chain guides worse than useless when it comes to the 'muddy ride' type of chain drop - issue is often the rear mech being clogged and the chain drops off the bottom of the ring and then, if you have a chain guide, it just jams in that instead of falling right off.
