I’ve been inventing again.
The problem ..soggy ,muddy backpack when I get to work.
Trying to find a wipe dry /clean backpack with waist band pockets and internal compartments has eluded me.
Then tonight I spied a front mucky nutz and a solution.
Melted some holes through with a soldering iron and a few cable ties, job done.

Very clever. Could a mucky nutz be made into a cod piece to stop me getting mucky nuts from the front wheel too?
Mudguards too tricky a solution?
I have crud guards but still get spray up my back.
My full mudguard bike is ok but not fun to ride over the bumps.
Full length granny mudguards no question on any commuter!
Fashion doesn't even get a thought when needing to stay clean getting to work.
Don't care what the kids think when I take it on the pump track at lunchtime.
Also I'd advise to get pannier bag, or a bar clip mounted bag for carrying anything.
Saves sweaty backpack back.
^^^ No far too sensible. Mudguards Winter only for me* (maybe a little bit of late Autumn).
For wet commutes I just use the cover that came with my bag.
*short commute and lucky!
I really rate SKS beaver tailmud guard set.
It doesn't stop 100% of muck, but certainty over 90%.
You can't have your cake and eat it, you're gonna have to get long wheel hugging guards if you don't want a brown strip up your back, and a muddy face.
I have an Alpkit gourdon but it doesn’t have any pockets.

"Giant" saddle bag?

Wouldn't one of those fluo backpack covers work just as well? It'll get muddy, but you can detach it & hang it somewhere to dry and your backpack will be clean & dry underneath?
A lot of bags come with them tucked away in a zipped pocket - my Vaude & Osprey bags both do.

What a clever idea...
Not clever enough as my waist bands stop the covers fitting at the bottom.
Trust me I've tried everything.
My decathlon rucksack has a cover that fits around the pockets.
@Zippykona, you should send that in to Take A Break magazine. They love things like that . You might even win £10
This is what I used until yesterday. It's still good.

2 thoughts - other than I like your bodge - awesome work if it does the job!
Lomo day bag rucksack is the approach I’ve taken. It’ll literally float in water without letting any in. I bought the Lomo mini pack of 3 little dry bags which I use inside it to get round the lack of pockets in it. One for clothes to change into, and 1 for phone / keys / wallet / general crap. 1 spare which I use in my bumbag thing for off-road which was meant to be waterproof but isn’t (not Lomo).
The other thought is the carradice saddle bag thing which is waterproof and pretty big already - certainly enough for a laptop / shoes / some clothes.
Had a look as well but they are too big for my needs and pretty weighty..
I hate having to fish around the bottom of backpacks for my wallet. Also big with single bags your pump ends up laying at a really uncomfortable angle on your back.
The Osprey cover can be had for £7 last time I looked - I use mine on threedifferent sorts of bag with no probs from hip belts etc. Just tightens up with elastic drawcord, has an attachment for a rear light and reflective bits. Never managed to get water through it despite Devon downpours.
Mudhugger front and rear mudguards. The rear is way more effective than anything else. fits both hardtails and full sus and I've it's solid and silent even on big rocky alpine descents.
Anything else you've still got either a muddy bag or a muddy bag cover you need to deal with at work.
If you are going to have a muddy bag then Ortlieb as you can hose/wipe down quickly and easily. If my bike is really dirty after a commute I just hose the pannier while it's still wet....
Fatty with a mud hugger and the extender.
Still get a muddy bag.
