Just built a mud bike from a Soul. Currently shod with 1.95/2.1 trailrakers on XC 717s. Using an alloy seat post and managanese gobi the bike is really harsh - much more so than my other hardtail but that wears 2.25s.

Is there a mud bias tyre in 2.25 that doesn't cost the earth, is tough (weight not so much of an issue covered in shite). I ride in the Chilterns so can get pretty thick mud.

Currently running with tubes but might get round to tubeless if the rims will do so with 2.25 safely.

Yup, chilterns rider here and I really like these tyres. Storm Controls or Mud Kings are good when it's really wet, but most of the time Purgatorys seem like a good balance between mud and larger-volume mixed ground ability.

Mud-x's are fantastic tyres although I believe they're only 2.1's, an XR4 if you want 2.25.

The only mud tyre with a bit of cush is the beaver, mud-x is harsh in comparison both 2.0

+1 for purgatorys, I also like a ground control on the rear for a little more speed in expense of some grip in corners

Barons for me- works as well in mud as a swampthing, works far better out of mud than any other mud tyre I've tried, and has decent volume. Not the toughest sidewalls though.

Mud x is brill but very low volume so will probably also end up feeling harsh.

Spesh purgatory, the control ones, not the s works, they're too fragile.

I do want something quite tough so fragile sidewalls would be out.

The XR4s look pretty good and quite cheap though the blurb talks about loose and rocky which the Chilterns are not!

Might have to splash for a carbon post too 🙁 . There's a lot showing so maybe some comfort to be had there too.

Mud X.

Weather's been so bad this year I've been riding for 12 months with them.Very durable...

Yes they are on the harsh side for more general riding but the guy asked for a mud tyre.

Slightly left field but I gave been using conti mk2 2.4 on the mendip and been impressed with soft condition grip. They seem to clear really well.

Maxxis Beavers are a much nicer riding tyre than Mud X.

Maxxis ADvantage for me. The wire bead ones are nice and cheap, grip well in the mud and will be ok when things dry up a bit too.

Cheers
