Need new tyres on my A3, struggled last year in the snow, are mud and snow tyres worth it for a front wheel drive or would i not notice the difference?

they do help lots. they wear a lot quicker though & more expensive so often not worth it for the uk (depends where you live).

snow socks are probably a better option. nothing beats chains though, well, a 4x4 does.

Had a set once, worked well but were noisy on the road.

You want winter tyres rather than mud and snow. Also, despite having a more open tread, the softer compound rubber means they aren't usually any noisier than regular tyres.
