For sale in Halfords for £8, do they actually work? Would they prevent mud flicking up into your eyes when riding? They look mighty small but great if they work well.

It'll stop some, but not all.
Based on my commuting experience (CX bike) I could see a lot of spray flying off the front/top edge of the tyre, which I would then ride into as it rose upwards.
Combining that with one of those neoprene gaiter things on the fork might work well
Mucky Nutz is just great as a nice cheap fit & forget bit of protection from the filth.
I got the big one too (Amazon and they also had a deal where the rear one added on meant a 10 or 20% discount on the overall price).
Both are very good indeed. I need to adjust the rear a bit but the front was rock solid, no rattles and crucially, I did not get covered in trail spray!
You can find templates easily on the Internet, just find some suitable material and you can knock one up in minutes. I did so recently as a stop gap until I got a mugguard short ordered.

They're useful if you put your bike in the car a lot with wheels off because they don't mind being bent out of shape. They stop a fair amount of stuff but I used to find I'd still get shit on my eyes in poor conditions. If you actually want to stop crap being thrown in your face I'd recommend the longer RRP.
Youre better off with a proper one, they're bigger so will work better but they're also less obvious as they follow the line of the wheel rather than stick out at an awkward angle
I went for a Mudhugger front shorty, which are only 360mm long but work brilliantly. The Mucky Nutz ones look too small really, thanks for the feeback.
Having tried many front guards over the years imo the best is the Crud XL...
Longer than most, fits most/all forks (inc. rigid and rear brace forks) and easily swapped between bikes.

Had to take glasses off as I took the too dark photochromics and couldn't see the trail line for the leaves... Mudguard did a grand job of keeping the crap out of my eyes.
I just leave my Mucky Nuts/Marsh Guard on all year round. They’re all right and much less conspicuous than a full guard.
