You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
After a rather sludgy ride today, my bike returned home nearly 3kg heavier than when it left, I know, that’s quite a bit of crap, right?!
On the days the bike needs a rough going over, I’d use washing up liquid and a sponge, when it needs doing properly, I get the bike cleaners out!!
Time to clean the bike properly, clean / de-grease and re-lube the drivetrain, clean and treat forks / dropper and all other moving bits…
To the shed for fluids of all kinds…
Chain lube - empty
Bike cleaner - nearly empty
Fork / dropper spray - just enough to get the job done…
I know, I know, Bad planning / stock keeping
Usually used list of fluids and concoctions include
Squirt all weather lube
Rhino goo bike cleaner / de-greaser
juice lubes fork juice
Just about to re-order new supplies but then noticed Muc Off are having a big sale plus my sister in law can get an NHS workers discount also
Sooooo…question…
Stick with what I usually use and know or get it all from the same place and take a discount on equivalent Muc Off products?!
All weather lube
Silicone shine
Bike cleaner / de-greaser
Regular RRP without discounts for Muc Off coming in at less than a tenner than my usual products
Any experience / opinions with Muc Off over what I’d usually use?
Is it better? The same? Not that great at all?
Opinions / experience all welcome
Thanks in advance
The degreaser is insanely good.
Wet lube is good unless you're a fan of something ultra thick like Finishline Wet - personally I found the latter too thick and sticky.
Dry lube is extremely light. It was excellent last summer in the hot, dry weather.
Bike wash is neither here nor there versus others - it's a bog standard one as far as I can tell.
Hope you found that helpful.
MucOff wet lube, you know how you came home 3kg heavier with all the mud, imagine that 3kg now sticking like tar to your drivetrain. It's banned in our house if my fella wants me to keep his drivetrain clean.
Fork/dropper spray I assume is silicone shine, just get any cheap silicone spray/lubricant as its all the same and you're paying for a shiny label. The chap I use to service my forks/suspension says to not bother with any of it. Fox and rockshox dont sell their own brand stuff and surely they would if they recommended using it.
Bike cleaner, I didnt really rate it and found it would still leave muddy lines/water marks whereas my usual finishline cleaner leaves it nice and clean.
I’ve never found anything with that brand name to be worth buying more than once.
Just browsing the muc off website further I noticed drivetrain cleaner so might have to add that whilst possibly (probably) forgetting about the bike cleaner
In regards to chain lube I’d probably plump for the all weather stuff as that’s what the squirt I ordinarily use is, so pretty much a like for like trade as it were
I guess the real question(s) from my original post would be
Squirt all weather chain lube vs muc off all weather chain lube
Rhino goo cleaner / de- greaser vs muc off drivetrain cleaner
Juice lubes fork juice vs muc off silicone shine
Is there anything else that I SHOULD be using that I’m currently not?!
I avoid the line as friends who have used it don't seem to finish the bottle before trying something else. The bike cleaner works and I tend to get that when it is on offer.
Pretty sure Squirt is wax-based, the muc-off stuff is an oil-based lube (unless they've both introduced new product lines). If so, then they won't be the same (depending on how you apply it - 5 minutes before a ride then the oil-based lube will probably last longer!).
Silicone shine - I've had a can of this for as long as I can remember - it kind of works for putting a nice finishing shine on the frame/forks after cleaning, but whether it stops further dirt from sticking is hard to say. Does last for blimmin ages though.
I use Supaguard alloy wheel protector on my Ti frame - that definitely does (hydrophobic dontcha know). It'd probably work on painted frames too.
Some pretty decent comments / observations
Leaning towards sticking with what I know in regards to chain lube so will order another bottle of squirt as I’ve never had any issues with it
@DickBarton you’re right, squirt is wax and water based
Has anyone any experience of the muc off drivetrain cleaner / de-greaser? Is it any better / worse at half the price of the rhino goo I’d normally use?
The degreaser is insanely good.
is that the muc off drivetrain cleaner or rhino goo you’re referring to?
If you do go down the Muc off route they might still be doing gift vouchers with 20% off using the code "xmas" and then use those to buy what you want with an extra 20% off using the code "crimbo20".
Regarding chainlube the c3 ceramic dry lube is cheaper at sigma sports than the normal stuff is at muc off even accounting for the discount pretty much.
@johnnystorm that’s what has pretty much prompted this post, wondering whether it was worth it over what I’d normally use as I’ve never used muc off stuff before
Any experience / opinions with Muc Off over what I’d usually use?
Their chain lubes are the worst ever tested by Zero Friction Cycling, so much so, he calls says 'grinding paste' would be a better description. Just about anything else you could buy would be better....
IMO silicon spray is much of a muchness, probably cheaper on euro car parts.
But muc-off is convenient as it's regularly on offer in Aldi, so just pick up a few bottles when it's there.
Their wet lube is pure filth and not in a good way.
I picked some wet & dry lube up back in 2020 when I picked the bike up again. Didn’t know any better. My chai was black all winter and I just thought this was normal till I tried something else. Spotted similar looking chains on a couple of mates bikes… sure enough, muc off.
Probably to help them sell more drivetrain cleaner.
Their bike wash is expensive shite.
I’ve got some silicone shine that makes droppers and forks run a bit smoother for a ride or two. Not sure I would buy again.
Bike protect, got some cheap, not bad for spraying on a chain that I’ve just rinsed. Probably better products out there.
Generally underwhelming at a surprisingly high price.
I’ve been using the ceramic wet lube recently, certainly not found it to be a grinding paste.
At a guess, it likely depends on how it is applied... liberally coated and it probably will wash off easier and attract more mank easier.
Much like a wax-based lube - needs applied the night before so it sets.
I’d agree with that @DickBarton
My usual process when everything needs a refresh is to do it all and then put the bike away until next ride, I wouldn’t lube the chain just before a rides for the very reasons stated, “wet” drivetrain becomes a dirt magnet
Never had such problems with the squirt lube I use and that same process
Starting to lean towards avoiding muc off stuff
is that the muc off drivetrain cleaner or rhino goo you’re referring to?
Chain and gear degreaser is what I'm referring to. I think it is really good.
The lubes are OK, the bike wash is nowt special.
Beware, though, this is STW. There'll be 50 different opinions and several people who swear by their own degreaser made from fermented parsnips and lubes made from burdock root steeped in warm donkey piss.
I can't see past Squirt myself, but it gets applied after a bike wash so has time to dry and do its thing.
I do use the pink cleaner stuff from muc-off as it seems to work for me...but I tend to buy it when it is on a bogof offer for the large containers of it.
Suspect my bike cleaning isn't what some folk would call cleaning though but it seems to work for me.
Nothing special at all.
The wash isn't any good, Fenwicks I would recommended, especially the foaming chain cleaner.
The lubes, may as well use 3 in 1...
There are some decent specialised chain lubes like Squirt fir the dry, Rock n Roll blue for around, which have clear performance benefits.
Muc off lubes don't seem to have any.
I've got some left over, I only use if the other run out and I need something right away.
Hate the lubes. Cleaner used to be mediocre, haven’t used the new formula though.
Drivetrain/chain cleaner is really good. Picked up a couple of cans last week as Aldi we’re doing it on special again.
Not that you asked, but their chamois cream is also very good.
Do a proper search before buying off their site. Tend to have everything at full price but constantly doing promotion codes which don’t end up any cheaper than other places.
Thanks for all the replies guys and gals, always great to seek out others experience
Seems that the drivetrain cleaner might be the only muc off product (amongst those listed) that’d be worth getting
Looking around at prices though…
rhino goo - £15 for 1ltr to make up to 4ltrs (and I know this works and lasts insanely well from experience)
Muc off drivetrain cleaner £12-£20(ish) depending on where you buy from / deals etc 750ml and that’s yer lot
Think that’s a decision made, stick with what you know
Getting the general feeling that the fork and dropper spray I’ve been using isn’t necessarily worth it, are there any recommendations towards something that might be worth getting to keep the slidey parts tip top?!
If you hadn’t guessed already I’m relatively new to the whole (what I would have previously called) “heavy maintenance” thing having been guilty previously of being a “have bike, will ride and if anything stops working or makes a noise, drop it into the bike shop” kind of rider
I’ve also heard of people using hub oil to keep things working as they should?!
Is this something that would be worth looking into as a means of keeping things clean, lubricated and working well?
Would gladly take any suggestions / recommendations on this also
Thanks in advance again
I like their rim tape, found it easier to apply and slightly more durable when changing tires than tesa tape.
For balance...I also liked their rim tape and their tubeless valves are much better than the nukeproof ones I have
The pink wash seems fine. I've stopped using the wet ceramic lube as it collected too much gunk for me.
If you're after degreaser for drivetrain I just use the £12 screwfix for 5ltr jobbie that you dilute down. I have a 2ltr bottle that I have filled with pre-diluted ready to top up the chain cleaner, I swear eventually I'll actually use up the 5ltr bottle and need some more but it's not happened yet!
take your pick
