Thanks switchbacktrog.

I will be exploring that at some point when I'm up that way.

There is a harvesting diversion at the moment. I would print-off the map from the link at the bottom of the TROG home page as the diversion signs keep getting ripped out towards the end of the trail. If it rains on Saturday it will be wet. Normally takes about 3 days to dry out after rain. There is normally a group ride from Sandgalls Car Park at 9 o'clock on a Sunday morning which uses the off-piste when the VT is too wet to ride.

How sticky do you like your mud? Out to the West it's a clag-fest. To the East it's sandier. Choose your hard going conditions!

Just resurrecting this as I'm in Suffolk with my two boys next week for a couple of days.

They're 9 (near enough 10) and 7 capable of riding up and down bits of the South Downs with ease and can deal with berms and moderately steep rocky and rooty trails (e.g. our local trail centre).

I appreciate they might need to bail out or divert some bits but is there plenty of Viking that is likely to be rideable + suitable diversions?

Yes most of the trail is open and it’s riding well. Nothing tech or steep.

More for the benefit of anyone coming across this thread in the future, but there's a bike park opening near Ipswich soon (they are aiming for May bank holiday weekend);

Fantastic, thanks. Must be nearly 20 years since I've ridden in Tunstall/Rendlesham and it will make a nice variation on the trip back to my youth stomping grounds!

The first and last sections are diverted due to harvesting. There is also a marked shortcut as well if the youngsters have had enough. Some of the signs for the harvesting diversions (A4 sized green signs, white lettering) keep getting vandalised so we've given up replacing them. The outbound are OK but on the return leg when you pick up the LH turn onto the diversion just keep going in a straight line until you get to a fire road then turn right and you should then be able to find the signs again. Best to print-off a map from the website.
