I have travel insurance as part of my Nationwide bank account.
MTB is excluded from the basic policy so I was thinking of paying to upgrade.
But, the upgraded policy is limited and possibly not fit for purpose. It requires hazardous activities to be conducted with a qualified instructor. See below.
I was planning on riding a bike park and local trails, but not instruction.
So two questions:
1) Would this policy actually be ok if we're riding without an instructor? Seems to me that for bungee jumping, an instructor is reasonable. And for skiing (covered under their standard policy for 'free') there's no instructor requirement, so would they be 'reasonable' in the event of a trail accident.
2) If no, who's good at MTB insurance?
If you want to be covered for any of the activities listed below you need to buy a Hazardous Activities Upgrade.
You are only covered to do these activities if supervised by a qualifed instructor.
Land-based activities
• Bridge swinging (one jump only)
• Bungee jumping (one jump only)
• Canopy walking
• Fell walking (from 3,001 metres up to 5,440 metres above sea level)
• Hiking (from 3,001 metres up to 5,440 metres above sea level)
• Lacrosse
• Land yachting
• Mountain biking on recognised trails but not downhill racing or jumping (helmet must be worn)
Dog tag insurance, Ime most sports cover insurance are broadly similar, I’d go with dog tag or someone similar for peace of mind over that offered by your bank!
1) Would this policy actually be ok if we’re riding without an instructor?
No. Whether you think it's reasonable or not, the wording says you're not covered.
+1 for post above. (I use Snowcard for activity holidays, they started with snowsports but cover everything)
I've used Dogtag (as they were cheapest for me) and Snowcard (more expensive than Dogtag but cover my bike too)
No idea how they compare if you have to make a claim, luckily, but they both provide suitable cover, european cheaper than worldwide, and USA more expensive again.
I’ve just tried to renew my Dogtag and they seem to be having a problem with the underwriters and are not renewing or doing new quotes. I went with snowcard instead.
Thanks augustus.
It seems Dog Tag are not accepting new business:

Thanks for other recommendations. Went with Yellow Jersey in the end. Snowcard were three times the price.
