hi,
we will be visiting Spain next week and will be staying near Tortosa. can someone tell us if there are nice MTB trails there? and if so, where?
thanks!

The GR99 Ebro long distnace cycle route finishes near Tortosa so you could bag a few stages of that.

Its 570 miles long so you have loads to go at.
Let me know how you get on as I'd like to do it next year.
Good luck.
Hi there,
I live in Tortosa, spotted this post via google alerts
A cyclists paradise, as poolman says, the old railway is now a cycle path, very long, 40km or more, think it was extended recently, it cuts into the National Park des Ports, from S Catalunya into Aragon, near the Teruel border iirc, Arnes. All the [solar powered] lights have been stolen, so bring head torches and spare batteries ... some of the tunnels are over 1km long, proper dark.. En route, the Font Calda and beautiful Horta de Sant Joan [Picasso museum, views] The path is flat, as you would expect from an old railway, but there is plenty of mountain action alongside.
Above Tortosa, Sierra de Cardo, fantastic roads for access to the windmills, tracks everywhere over to El Perello and Rasquera [the famous ganga place] ... checkout the Balneari de Cardo between Benifallet and Rasquera, stunning, nice MTB tracks everywhere.
Just above Tortosa, the road "Sympatica" that goes on up from the Hospital Verge de Cinta to the Hermitage at the top, near the Antennas, has many cycling MTB paths all over the "abandanado" ... wild land, plenty of cool jumps too put in by the kids at weekends.
Cycling is very popular here now, locally several shops with proper kit, MTB and Road racing, lunatic Nationalists make it an unfriendly part of Spain, they take great delight in overcharging or being just plain difficult, persevere and stick to your guns...
Mental rains forecast Thursday to Sunday, lots of red clay around here.
Hope that helps.
Hi Tortosa, I am bit further south to you in Valencia.
I'll pm you as I hope to do the whole GR99 next year. Is it tarmacced or that hard pressed shale stuff the other via verdes are made of, if the latter, I got loads of punctures but now run Marathon Pluses & no problems since (except in wet when there's no grip).
If you find yourself Valencia way pm me, I have loads of routes.
The rain forecast has been pushed back to friday eve now.
