Yeah I know I can ride roadie jersies on an MTB, of course, and I have been. Just wondering if there's a neat way of carrying my phone and wallet on my person without putting them in a saddle bag. Jersey pockets are ideal for this, but I hate putting stuff in shorts pockets.
Bum bag (or hip pack if you want to sound slightly cooler).
MTB jersey will likely be baggier so any rear pockets will flap about, not ideal for stowage of stashables. I use an ancient sleeveless Castelli road jersey under a looser top and this works well for me except when it get hot, or a fanny pack (Dakine Hot Laps 2).
I've got a couple of Troy Lee Ruckus ¾ sleeve jerseys that have two rear zipped pockets, I'd prefer long sleeves but not found anything with rear pockets and long sleeves.
My endura humvee top has a rear pocket. Never used it though as i prefer things in my pockets rather than on my back.

Yes, I had a Mavic jersey with a pocket that did just this. Another option might be one of the close-fitting under-vest type things with pockets. I've got a RaceFace one I use sometimes, erm, Stash. Also has a hydration system pocket. Specialized does similar.
No bumbags. I hate the things.
Under-shirt vest sounds like a good idea though.
Putting stuff in loose shirts doesn’t work, it sags and bounces around.
For this very reason, many mtb liner bibs now have pockets.
I really like my Specialized Swat bibs, the pockets hang over the waist belt of your short, so don’t push it down.

I know loose shirt pockets don't work. Just thinking if there's something less roadie styled but still snug enough to work.
I only want to stash a phone and keys. Those Spesh shorts look great, I hadn't thought of this.
EDIT: Yess, they are a thing apparently, made by several manufacturers, not too expensive and exactly what I want!
Anyone got the Endura ones?
Evoc, Mavic and and Dakine make sneaky waist packs that go under your shirt.

i have two MT500 full zip jersies, the oldest must be 4 maybe 5 years old and still going strong. Three back pockets (one also has a zipped section) and a chest pocket with glasses wipe.

Seconded. Actually I love mine - honestly I think they're the best MTB innovation I've bought in the last decade. I know you all think that's ridiculous but they let me go out without a bag yet I still carry phone, keys, pump, tools, tube +/- snack. Game changing.
They've also lasted incredibly well. I've worn them on almost every MTB ride in the last 3 years and they look new still. The baggy shorts that came with them fell apart really quickly, though.
Before I bought them, I wore a tight-fitting roadie jersey under an MTB baggy one. It works OK. I've heard of some people buying triathlon sleeveless jerseys specifically for that purpose.
