Hi all midway through Cyclecross build and question,
the set of wheels I'd like are campagnolo which would mean having campag cassette, would a MTB rear mech like a xt one work with the cassette ie 25T?

Secondly, would the MTB rear mech work with my road shifters?

Basically want to know whether MTB rear mech be better than a road one for cx.

Thanks chaps

Shimano and campag despite having the same number of cogs, are spaced differently, so unless you are using campag shifters & mech's, its not going to work properly, it might mostly work though.

IF you use campag shifters but a shimano mtb mech, you might get closer to it working, but again, wouldn't recommend it.

But yes, for 7/8/9/10 speed shimano MTB & Road have the same pull ratio, so you can put an XT mech from any of those groups, on a road shifter from any of those groups.
EG my hybrid touring thing is running 10x2 tiagra flat bar shifters, with a 10 speed tiagra double chainset, 9 out of 10 cogs of an MTB cassette, on a 7 speed hub, 10 speed KMC road chain, with a 9 speed XT long cage rear mech, and the front mech is some random 80s Suntour road double. And it all works beautifully.

Not quite true. A 10spd shimano mtb rear mech won't work with 7/8/9/10 speed shimano road shifters.

^^ lol confused

So I CANT have campag cassette it would seem with shimano shifters 🙁

So can I...
Buy cheaper shimano freehub wheels (campag vento rather than preferred fulcrum 5s) then use shimano cassette probably a 25T with cx chainset (36/46) and a xt rear mech?

I've been told Road rear mech won't work in cx? So my dura ace one useless It would seem.

You should/might be able to get a Shimano compatible free hub.

Or if you can't, you should be able to space the cassette to Shimano spacing.

Either way, you can still use the Campagnolo wheels.

You can buy shimano freehubs for campagnolo high end wheels from total cycling . com

I don't get this bit:

don't race CX but see plenty of 105 based bikes and get impression some CX racers opt for Tiagra just to limit replacement costs as damage is frequent

Cool so here's final plan.

Don't buy fulcrum 5s as adding in a shimano freehub pushes cost too high.

Buy vento cx wheelset with shimano freehub.
Stick current 28t casstte(da) on with dura ace rear mech, combine this with cx chainset and road shifters (again da)

That should work fine correct? And if da rear mech gets mucky just replace with a MTB xt one.

That will work....

Thanks again for help.
