Hello again,
Apologies if this has been done before.
So I am thinking of converting my rigid mtb that is a bit too small for me into a monstercross bike with drop bars for long distances. I was wondering what type of gearing I should use. I think SS is not really an option as it would be difficult to find the right gear and also quite tiring over long distances.
I know that 10 speed road and mtb stuff isn't compatible but I have got some 9 speed stuff in the parts bike (Deore XT derailleur, 11-34 cassette) that I could use with some road shifters.
The issue is I can't seem to find a dedicated 1x9 setup for road shifters, only lower spec 2x9. Is there something out there that I am missing? Or can I use a 2x9 and just not attach a front derailleur, just use the left lever for braking?
Sorry for the slightly long winded post and TIA.
I think Shimano 10sp road shifters (maybe apart from 1 weird series ??) work with 9sp mtb mech
(In fact I know this as my commuter has 10sp shifters and an old mtb mech)
So you are saying if I used a 10 speed shiter with 9 speed derailleur I could use a 10spd cassette?
10sp ROAD shifter, 9sp MTB mech - yes, that's what I use
Edit, these are the shifters to avoid:
Tiagra 4700 (and the associated RS405 hydraulic shifters) and GRX400 gravel mechs
Charlie the Bikemonger has Microshift bar end shifters in stock for both 9 speed MTB and 10 speed road set-ups. Just use the rear shifter coupled with drop bar brake levers of choice.
If you’ve a ten speed mtb mech and road shifter already then the wolf tooth tanpan is another option. I’ve had both 10 and 11 speed ones for years and they do the job nicely. My commuter/tourer has road shifters, road front mech, mtb rear mech and a 2x10 mtb drivetrain.
As above, 9 or 10 speed microshift bar-end shifters.
Very easy to fit, nice positive shift, means you can run whatever levers you like.
Been running 10 speed ones for 3 years/6000km on my Genesis Vagabond, and had zero issues.
