Last minute recommendations please! Family of four holiday (two boys, 4, 6) for a week, driving from Kent up to Moffat. I'm not taking my MTB as it'll be an extra thing to worry about, and I won't have the opportunity to ride it much anyway.
I would like to do at least one or two rides though, as I've never ridden in Scotland and it's been on the wishlist (but more the highlands proper) for years.
What's the most straightforward place to hire a mountain bike and go ride? Not looking for family friendly as it'll just be me. I like a mix of challenging terrain and fast flowy trails best, small jumps fine, but no big sends. Just want somewhere reasonably easy to navigate to from Moffat, doesn't take half the day to get there, hire a bike, and go ride!
Innerleithen is an hour away with a couple of shops that do hire. Ae is half an hour away but I don't know if the bike shop still does hire.
Looks like the trails on the hill next to moffat itself have gone, so Ae is your best bet. Great trails there.
Give the shop a bell to see about hire, I'd be surprised if they didn't still do it.
Cheers I'll investigate AE first then, their facebook page looks active, but no specific mentions of bike hire that I can see. Will call them when up there to be sure though.
Ae does bike hire, both types. They shut on Wednesdays. Group night rides on Tuesdays from around 6.15pm until 8-8.30pm ish. Old guys leave at 6.45, younger ones earlier if you want steeper and faster off-piste downhill sections. The cafe is open afterwards for a set dinner (main and dessert) for £7.50.
+ 1 for the bike shop at Ae, it’s 20 to 30 mins South of Moffat and they definitely hire bikes. A day at Ae and a day up at Innerleithen / Glentress would be good for starters.
What's the level like between Ae & Innerleithen/Glentress? I've ticked off most of the Ae off piste now on the hardtail but not exactly riding the steeper trails with finesse. Would I survive the Golfie?

Go and do the off-piste stuff at Glentress first, it's a bit more mellow than Inners/Golfie - and brilliant fun.
Golfie has such a huge number of trails there's bound to be stuff you'll be happy on - start with New York New York, Rocknroll into Plan B and then maybe Feed the Pony. Those are some of the more flowy trails.
Cheers, exactly the kind of advice I needed.
