So I love my Gabba jacket, I’m wearing it daily at the moment. But it’s not really the right cut/style for MTB. Is there anything that’s the same warmth /wind proof but a baggier style more suitable for MTB?

Alpkit morphosis. Slightly different design but does the same thing, but slightly more breathable. Been living in the hooded one, can’t wait for the smock to be instock. It’s perfect for MTB and running when cold.

I live in Gabba/Alpha in the road through the winter too!

Gore phantom?

Those look technically just the ticket but the current colours are gopping enough for me to reject outright. Sorry!

This looks like a good shout. Cheers - I'll check them out when the shops are open again. It's a shame they're not in stock for a while though.

I do like the look of that Morphosis but I think it would be too warm.

My Perfetto says 4-16c and I would love to find something similar for MTBing.

My Perfetto is more like 1-10°C for me. Which seems like it covers ~70% of a year in commuting. But yeah the Morphosis looks more substantial. There's more hanging around in MTB though.

Have a look at the Stolen Goat Orkaan if you can find a design that's not too mad!

Depends what you wear under it. The 'fleece' is only on the bits you want to keep warm, so the rest of it is effectively a pertex windproof. Been really impressed when running in it as usually I'm too hot in anything other than a longsleeve skins base layer with a t-shirt over the top, but I've not been overly sweaty in it, either in the snow over a ls merino plus ss base layer or in slightly warmer weather over just a ss baselasyer. Breathes better than the Gabba, less of the clammy feeling and drys ultra quick.

Why do you need to have a baggier upper half? Do you need the extra wind resistance or discomfort from chafing to slow you down? Do you need to look rad in front of all of your mates on their Yeti SB130's?

Just wear your gabba?

I just can't do this.

Clean clothes for road, filthy rags for MTBing.

Isn't a gabba wet weather clothing for the bike? What happens when it rains outside and road spray gets on your gabba - do you buy a new one? Do you think that diesel oil and road grime is less damagine to a softshell than a little bit of mud you can wipe off with a damp cloth?

Stop being a tart m'love.

I'd be happier getting my gabba filthy than my morphosis if I'm honest!

I have a Morphosis, I'd say it's more like an affordable Rab VR Alpine, or whatever they are now. Less wind resistant than a Gabba and a fair bit less water resistant too, but really good in cool conditions if you run hot.

The Gabba is essentially light, close-fitting, Gore Windstopper with some vented areas. Quite a few outdoor brands do something along those lines, a really nice one is the Berghaus Taboche Jacket, if you can find one - really nicely cut, mostly windstopper except for the torso side-panels and the insides of the sleeves. For me a Morphosis or Rab VR works better on a mountain bike, but something like the Taboche is closer to a Gabba if that's what you're after and a little cooler as there's more non-Windstopper panelling.

Edit: Windstopper now Gore-Tex Infinium, I think. I wish they'd stop renaming their fabrics ever six months :-/

Oh, and fwiw, I wouldn't wear a Gabba on a mountain bike either. It just looks wrong and is cut to work in a road-riding stance.

I'm kinda with you, a bit, in that I have some winter road kit which I wouldn't choose to use on the MTB but that's largely due to me fearing that the fabrics wouldn't tolerate much abrasion from packs and snags from gorse etc.

And FWIW I'm a big fan of lary designs on the road so prefer some of the Stolen Goat stuff to the more restrained Castelli/Rapha styles.

Or you could fit mudguards.

The Galibier Sentinel is a cheaper alternative to the Gabba, but I don't know if the cut would work for mtb.

Been through this myself recently as my ancient (all black) Gore Phantom has a failing zip and is pretty much falling apart.

After looking into all kinds of on bike and off bike options I came across a couple that haven't been mentioned too often.

A scottish company called Keela makes a couple of possible options, the Lynx and the Zenith Pro.  I actually got in touch with them and they replied that for MTB'ing these would be their best options, both are classed as multisport and are therefore cut longer in the back.

The other one I remembered was the Ground Effect Frosty Boy, I actually had one of these yearsa ago when it was basically a windproof fleece and it was very warm (too warm really for all but way below zero) but had little to no water resistance, it's now a softshell that's not as warm but has the usual DWR coating etc. They also have the Draft Dodger which is a more traditional cut but has only the 2 front pockets.

I've had a few pieces of Ground Effect stuff and it seems well made and well cut for MTB, worth a shout although it comes from New Zealand so takes a week or so to arrive and returns might be a faff.

Links if interested..

My Perfetto is not covered in road slime because I don't ride in the rain! ( MTB in rain is OK but not road ).

PedalEd Tokaido Alpha sort of does the same thing.

Then why do you have a perfetto?

I'm so confused.

Because the occasional drop may land on me before I can dash home.

Seriously, it seems to be a good solution for most of my Autumn, Winter and Spring rides. 4 - 16 degrees.

I wouldn't set out in a Gabba in the rain*. It's for cool days where there's a either light drizzle or intermittent showers. If it's actually raining I'll wear a waterproof.

* I also probably wouldn't set out on a road ride in the rain but whatever.

Oh, and some roadie things can be worn on an MTB no problem. Not a Gabba, though.
