Hi there!

My name is Angus and I am a student at Loughborough University, UK.
I am currently undertaking a final year design project with the brief of:

"Design a drivetrain with specific advantages for MTB."

Please could you help me out by filling out my short survey.

Short Survey

If anyone is willing I am looking to open a discussion about the following questions.

What are the main issues you have with your MTB drive-train? Both in use and in maintenance.
Have you looked at new innovations? I.e. Carbon Belt Drive, Electric Shifting, Internal Speed Hubs...
If you have or haven't decided to 'upgrade', what have been your reasons?

Any thoughts or experiences you could give would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your time.

All the best,
Angus

I'd like an internal gear hub, the main barriers are cost and ease of servicing. I'd gladly accept the weight penalty to be rid of the horrible chain growth associated with traditional drivetrains.

Done. But I won't be much use. I'll be an anomaly in your statistics.

Done. Good luck.

My holy grail would be something with the range of 1x10 / 1x11, very low maintenance and simple to fit/maintain/repair. Like the idea of belt drive, but doesn't seem to be proven tech for MTB yet (and currently (AFAIK) requires the use of hub gearing which is not ideal for off-road IMO, although I guess a lower cost BB mounted gearbox would get round that issue).

Id like a gear box belt drive, but concerns are weight, cost, shifter compatability ie it’s really only grip shift, which Im not keen on. Have scuppered that!!

Oh and Done!

Why isn't hub gearing suitable for MTB or off road?

Rohloff is available with paddle thumb shifters. Only issue is weight, but when you compare it to affordable 11 or 12 speed cassettes it's not.

Rohloffs have the uncanny ability to kill all most any bike dead. Making it numb and hang up on any trail feature as well as terribly unbalanced.

Mines has ended up on my fatbike....that's where I notice it the least. Great concept . Real life execution it's crap the weights

It's been on 4 bikes now all bar the fat bike have ended up subsequently being conventionally geared or singlespeed and every one has felt better for losing the rohloff.

some of your questions could have more than one answer (better to rank choices than pick just one ?)

I found the same as trail rat with my Rohloff.
It’s now just used on a commuter bike rather than winter mtb I got it for.
