Just checking with the combined knowledge of STW that this is a working combo

10 speed road shifters (olde world 105 or Ultegra)

10 speed MTB cassette

9 speed MTB rear mech

There’s nothing newer that will match this side of a gravel group set?

So at that age your looking cable pull brakes. Soooo microshift brifters (that pull MTB cable pull), 11 speed Shimano mtb mech and 11 speed MTB cassette. 1x11 wide range with drop levers.

Yes, that is the exact setup I have on my bike.

I'm using Avid BB5 road cable pull disc brakes, more than enough stopping power and no fluid to boil on long descents.

Yep basically all 10 speed shimano levers, apart from Tiagra 4700 or later will work with Shimano 9 speed MTB mechs.

Ultegra 6700 is the sweet spot I reckon.

Shimano Road/Gravel 11 spd mechanical STIs work with Shimano MTB 11 spd mechanical rear mech with the addition of a Wolftooth Tanpan 11.

Works really well.

Thanks all - particularly Nixie for the pointer away from Shimano.

Have decided on a punt with Microshift XLE with 11 speed compatibility as I’d like the build to be a bit quirky, which it will with half a 90s Shimano external cable look! Shifter/levers new picked up for the price of passable 105s 10 speed.

Will probably go Avid BBs as have had good experience in the past and has been said, they’re pretty simple.

Have you seen the reviews of the new Microshift gravel sort of groupset? 10speed think called Spear?

On the calipers I think trp spyre are supposed to perform better than Avid BBs or TRY hy/rd better again (these being semi hydraulic with cable from caliper to lever then hydraulic pistons). Whatever you go for don't skimp on the brake cables.
