Disaster!!!!
Just back from a night out under the stars and after checking the forecast which was light winds and max 15mph winds but a wind chill of -6 decided to head up Garburn Pass and beyond. On finding a suitable spot pitched the tent and got a fire on and drank a beer feeling very smug with myself hit the sack at 12am. 2am was woken with the strong winds and the tent doubled over on top of me, due to the cold decided to sit it out hoping it was a short term episode, how wrong was I. Pole snapped and all hell broke lose, got my shoes on and decided to abandon ship at this point its snowing and bitter, threw everything inside the tent unhooked the pegs and decided to seek cover about 50 metres below. During this side of the outer got ripped not sure how but large rip!!
Now the tent was on its second outing it survived Brian but I was low level, obviously would not have pitched so open if I had known and only myself to blame so whats the warranty/repair scheme with MSR

Rich

Bu88er.

Can't help with the warranty issue much, but the UK importers are pretty good. Check with your retailer first, if no joy speak to the distributor, ProAgencies https://www.proagencies.com/msr

I have a LuxeOutdoor Habitat, which is almost a direct copy of the Hubba Hubba, with just a tiny little difference to the cut of the fly sheet. In similar conditions (Storm Desmond), I stupidly pitched halfway up the Brecon Beacons in December. This ended up with the tent imploded on top of me as you describe, though my poles did survive without breaking, but permanently bent. I therefore somewhat sympathise with your experience! Its difficult to sleep when the top of your tent keeps pressing on your face...
Must have been rather scary, we were, at least, tucked into a little valley on the way up, having been physically blown over several times attempting to find a spot near Llyn Cwm Llwch which I'd advised my mate would be sheltered from the SW winds being below a massive slope. The wind was coming vertically downward in 90mph gusts...we quickly got lower.

I’ve had a very positive dealings with MSR warranty in the past. The very early dragonfly stoves had an inherent fault where the burner cone would detach from the pivot. Not expedition ending, but a bloody nuisance.

MSR were brilliant. Called and explained the fault. Sent in the stove complete with fuel pump and got a completely service pump back with new burner.

Hopefully their tent warranty process is as good.

MSR are part of Cascade Designs (thermarest, Platypus) so i'd expect customer service to be better than most.

I've got the single person MSR Hubba NX from two years back. When I was reading up on them there were a couple of disaster stories in the reviews along similar lines to your experience. The reviewers were blaming the pole system. I've taken mine to the Highlands on two multi day cycle camp off road trips. Dartmoor, the Lakes several times and Exmoor several times . But I have been mindful of the reviews and therefore careful about choosing a sheltered pitch, and my trips so far have not been during extreme weather episodes.
This year I've been hamstrung by family illness so it hasn't had a trip out.
I chose it because I'm getting older and it has an enhanced comfort rating for a light weight one person tent. You don't have to contort yourself to get dressed in it etc, and it is one of the best small tents for combating condensation.
But yes--- I'd be careful not to pitch it in an overly exposed location.

Good luck with the warranty.

I had a Hubba Hubba NX fold under on us in strong gusts on the summer solstice in a not particularly exposed location. The end poles aren't really supported adequately imo and the guying points at the tent ends are arguably in the wrong place and should be doubled up. They're nice tents in calm conditions, but a good advert for geodesics and burly tunnels in rougher weather. The Access tents are similar, but a bit tougher.

The Cascade Designs European lot - based in Ireland - are good guys, but I guess they could argue that you were using the tent in conditions it wasn't really designed for. If you want a really light tent that's more dependable in high winds, it might be worth having a look at Nordisk - they have some interesting videos of their tents being wind tunnel tested:

I've got the Nordisk Telemark 1. I've used it on three multi day trips in the Highlands and it will stand up to way more than you think it will. But it is cramped and you have to do more contorting than my 60 year old body wants to be doing to get in/out/dressed/etc. You also invariably have inner tent in your face when you are sleeping, and if you get a still night with rain, where you can't open the fly considerably, you do get more than your fair share of condensation.

I would trust it in foul conditions more than the MSR though, it's just that the MSR is leaps and bounds more comfortable.

Ha my mates Nordisk Telemark did not stand up to bike touring very well.

The first use with the poles stored as per instructions in the pole sleeve.

The poles vibrated on the rough stuff and wore holes in the yet.

Nordisk said no to any help.

I thought that was poor. Used as designed.

I must have carried mine about 500 miles so far in a Revelate bar bag, and I've not had that problem. The material used in the tent is wafer thin though, so I'm not surprised.

I think you did quite well to get a warranty replacement out of that scenario.

If you fancy a more UK-biased take on the MSR, try looking at the Trekkertent Phreeranger.
