I'm making the move from Nottingham to Sheffield next week. There is obviously load of good riding around the city but are there are any regular group rides going on or mtb clubs to get involved with? Any advice appreciated.
Ta, Adam
Sorry, I thought you said 'North'. Sheffield is not 'North'. Leeds is almost North but that's about it. York & above is proper North.
Join Ride Sheffield on fb and twitter. Plenty of clubs and riders will help you out.
York is in the Midlands.
There's a 'Sheffield mountain bikers' group on meet up that seem pretty active and have rides on most weeks. Not been on any myself yet (happy to ride on own / currently too unfit to keep up) but there seems to be a fairly diverse bunch looking at the member profiles
And yes, Sheffield is the north - intact it's the official start of it!

North Midlands at best
S17 is part of the south east of england, the rest of sheffield is full on arctic 8)
The other way to tell is if you see people using the near side lane on the motorway. That's illegal in the sarf I think.

I'm a born and bred southerner who regards my time living in Loughborough as my 'Northern Chapter' and that is sadly true.
The reason for the squiggle is that it's easier to be northern (as denoted by a funny accent) if you live west, so Birmingham is more northern than Peterborough, for example. For the record, the correct dividing line is from the Wash to just above Gloucester. Anything above the Manchester-Leeds motorway zone is 'Proper North' and at some point between there and the borders you are into 'Here be Dragons' territory.
Norfolk, East Anglia etc are largely their own little bit, like Wales.
Since when was Stoke in the North?
Just where the north is is relative ...
Because we're all related! 😀
Ok, didn't mean to start a northern bragging war. I'll rephrase... "I'm moving further north relative to my current location".
Sheffield "The North" pfffttttt
ITS NOT NORTH ENOUGH TILL YOU EAT ONLY PIES, DRINK ONLY ALES AND YOURE ALWAYS COLD AND TIRED AND MISERABLE AND GEORGE OSBORNE COMES INTO YOUR HOME AT NIGHT TO STEAL YOUR FAGS YOUR WHIPPET AND YOUR DUVET [INC DREAMS*].

Are you sure you want to do this???!
I was going to say Nottingham is already North!
Anyway - here's Wikipedia's take on it - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_England
Here's a test, do you say:
"Well, I didn't know that"
or
"Well, I'll got t'foot of oor stairs"
Even London is at 51 degrees North, putting it 'above' much of Canada,
GB's North / South Dividing line runs from The Severn, to (nearly) The Humber.
see?
The exact location of the line has been decided in the most democratic way possible - by asking people if they felt 'Northern' or 'Southern'
Anyway, Adam - which area of Sheffield will you be living in?
Sheffield "The North" pfffttttt
I've been to Sheffield twice. On both occasions the natives tried to steal my car.
It's definitely North.

Yeah but we're talking about the UK not Canada.
the m62 is the boundary between north and south..............FACT
My wife comes from Nuneaton and when she moved oop north ( Barnsley) 8 years ago she couldn't understand a word some people said. Sheffield is definitely south...they have tv, broadband and coffee shops.
Whoever would have guessed that this thread would quickly descend into miserable pedantry from the usual suspects, eh?

Ooooh! Someone has the Friday grumps.
The puddings are definitely better up north too.
Bury black pudding is the food of the gods......like ambrosia, but better............FACT
*reads thread*
* gets in car*
*drives south at motorway speeds for six hours*
*gets out of car and looks around*
*shakes head in disbelief that still apparently in "the north"*
*goes home and cries softly in despair at the state of the world*
I always thought anything north of the M25 was up north 😀
*insert joke about the Tamar here*
You have to go way up north to get proper black pudding. Isle of Lewis.
To them we're all southerners *shudder*
I know it's not really the done thing, but to answer the OP's question - I don't know of any specific groups but as in sure you know Sheffield has a reputation for being very 'outdoorsy' with a big social side relating to that. Don't think you'll struggle to find new buddies to ride/climb/run with.
York is in the Midlands.
Thanks Drac, being a Durham lad myself, I kinda knew that. 😉
North = where oatcakes cease to be pancakes filled with cheese.
(moving in a northernly direction obvs. Not south of the midlands)
T'other half was born in Wick, she's fond of reminding me that almost everyone is from down south as far as she's concerned.
pancakes filled with cheese
This can't be true. Stop making shit up, or kill me now.

Well it's just after you where the road signs stop saying The North. 😀

+1
When the road signs stop saying "The north" and actually start listing place names then it's the North.
Doncaster bypass IIRC?
As for the OP, enjoy Sheffield, by far my favorite city to live in.
I thought Nottingham to Sheffield was a commute?
Doncaster bypass IIRC?
Nope just before the Angel of the North.
Doncaster is part of Scotland anyway, so what does that count as?
Do Sheffieldonians have a slab of mature cheddar on their fruitcake? That's the real test....and it's a surprisingly good combination....

Dare you to come to Huddersfield and say that.
I've been to Sheffield twice. On both occasions the natives tried to steal my car.
Oh, that's good. It'll remind me of Nottingham then.
I think everyone is forgetting about the Midlands. There's more than just North and South. Birmingham, Derby, Notts, Leicester. Neither North nor South.
Thanks for the Meetup group link too, whoever it was who posted that.
Ahwhiles -
Anyway, Adam - which area of Sheffield will you be living in?
Moving to Crooks.
There's more than just North and South.
Yes, it manifests itself as congestion on the M6. My life would be easier if we got rid of Birmingham.
Crooks eh, what's your take on BMX tracks and jumping? Bolehills is excellent for a ride around and you're the correct side of the city for the woods (Wharncliffe and Greno) without TOO much of an epic journey.
Congratulations on making the correct decision. Sheffield is the best place I have lived.

I did spot the track on google maps. Very short ride from my house. I will definitely pop down and try it out. Is it a busy spot?

Glad to hear it! Looking forward to moving.

I'm with Ton on that measure.
eg. Cheshire, for example, is clearly "Southern"
Serious answers:
1. Is it really worth moving from Nottingham to Sheffield. They're 40 miles apart. That's not worth relocating for.
2. Wharncliffe is a pretty good starting point for riding in Sheffield area. There's a FB group I think.

Why not? I'm moving to live in a new city not to be nearer a job. I think being able to ride from the door to the peaks is probably worth moving for. I can think of better things to do with my time than an 80 mile round trip in a car too. Each to their own I guess...
No No No from the Sussex pov you're all Northerners or you're Sorrey or right Kent's
adsbatts89 - MemberMoving to Crooks.
it's Crookes, with an 'e', but...
...I'm moving to live in a new city.../...ride from the door to the peaks
...you've nailed it, but don't tell everyone.
(handy for the bmx track too)
Nope just before the Angel of the North.
The signs on the A184 heading out of Gateshead onto the A1 (so just north of there) used to (may still do but a lot of roadworks round there recently as you're probably aware) say The North and The South.
I had a friend from Manchester who I went to uni in Newcastle with. She once tried to drive home and turned north onto the A1 because the sign said "The North" and she thought "I live in Manchester, which is in The North." 😆 I think she got to Morpeth (you know, where the A1 becomes a single track dirt road) before she realised.
Yeah, Bolehills is great for a sunny evening practising jumps and is pretty popular. Rivelin valley is just over the back as well.
Easy to find people to ride with in Greno and Wharncliffe and people up here are reyt friendly.
it's Crookes, with an 'e', but...
Crooks is what the locals call it...

Typical southerner. Ah! Yes when hit that track I know I'm home.
Sheffield is ace. I moved here 5 years ago - best decision I ever made (mind you, I did live in Donny before that 😀 ).
Did you find a group?
Great riding in the area your spoilt for choice, I'd pop into 18 bikes in Hope have a good chin wag with them, they'll give you plenty of info re local riding clubs.
York is in the Midlands hmmmm NOT
Ever heard of east midlands airport.... 1hour & 40 mins South of York
I moved to Sheffield once. I'm still here.
Crooks is what the locals call it...
I use the 'e' but only been in Crookes since 1992. Not quite local yet!
Great place to live in general but riding in particular. The only downside is every ride ends up hill! Bolehills is great, official pumptrack reopening tomorrow lunch time so the track will be buzzing.
Drop me a mail if you are struggling for routes or a group to ride with.
I'm so southern, Newbury is a bit grim north
Where is the barth/ bath , grarse/grass line?
That must tell you where the North is.
Zippykona- not really, listening to any ****er in Jesmond would have you believing you're in some hipster-infested place in the south.
So being on the Sussex Coast, anything North of M25 J6 is very North and all the maps show North of the Thames, is DANGER AREA, full of Heathens, Dragons, Tygers and no sun.
In fact the only thing we know exists north of the Thames are the Hitchin Yorkshire pudding mines.
I'm a Crookes local, loads of really good riding from bolehills out to fox hagg and back, most of the good stuff you really need to explore or be shown but theres a couple of hours of some amazing technical trails around the area, but as noted the best route ends in a lovely up hill road climb.
Tend to ride from my house in the week so give us a shout if you fancy a ride
