You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Iv been reading a few old threads on this,, and iv made the decision to move to a DJ bike - I currently have a BMX which I use with my lads on the pump track but I really don’t like the feel now between riding MTB to BMX, I feel reluctant to jump on the BMX so thinking something with 26” wheels and longer will make me feel a lot better, and my boys won’t say I look silly 😜. I’m on a budget as everyone is so I’m looking 2nd hand but I was kind of thinking now 27.5 and 29 are the favoured MTBs could I get a cheap older slacking Hardtail and make that into a DJ bike, or is it better to just get purpose built. I’m 6ft 2 so be interested to see what others think on this?
I can't speak from experience of going from BMX to anything, but I bloody love my little DJ bike. I've got a gt labomba, great thing. Small and lightweight so perfect for me to learn pump tracks and eventually real life sort jumps.
I ride mostly my 27.5 full susser and don't have any problems transitioning.
I'd say the main benefit of an actual DJ bike is they have the geometry to suit that type of riding and are strong and simple. Single speed, no fuss, bash it around. Sorted.
I'm the same size and used to have a Calibre Astronut. It was a really good size for me, but I sold it last year as I don't live close enough to a pump track to justify it.
Last time I looked, there was a few second hand knocking about, and Millets, or Blacks were selling frame only for a bit.
DJ bikes should be 26inch
if its got 27.5 or 29s then its just a small hard tail
26 inch wheels make the pump track come alive
DJ bikes aren't what we would call slack. A small 26" hardtail won't ride the same.
Octane One zircus frames can usually be picked up new for a fair price if you're wanting to build yourself.
Small hardtail isn't the same as a DJ bike, back ends are shorter, around 390-420 reach (you dont want something with a mega long front!)
Plenty of options on pinkbike/facebook market/ebay.
Budget ?
Budget is very small £100-200 max really
I agree you need one in your life, I have an airdrop fade.
Facebook market place and ebay has a few nice ones, maybe look at second hand NS as there is more of these floating around
If you’ve got easy access to pump and bmx tracks, and a child who is into it too, you won’t regret it. I went from
Race bmx, to cruiser, to old hard tail to proper 26” jump bike (a zircus, as mentioned above) and I get out on it 2-3 times a week. It’s brilliant and ultimately much easier to ride than a smaller wheeled bike, but much easy to jump and manual than an mtb.
Not sure you’ll do it for 200 quid though, unless you have a good garage full of 26” kit.
Might get lucky, someone on one of the Facebook groups I'm on git a complete Sidekick for that.
Can you send me link pls?
