I'm currently running a 1x setup on a planet x tempest, using an mtb m8050 rear mech, 11-42 cassette, and 42t from chain ring.

I'm struggling a bit on some of the hills, and was interested in moving to 2x11 to get greater gearing range..but am a bit unsure what kind of chainring/cassette combo I can use with mtb di2 derailleurs...anyone know any handy guides?

Thanks...thats really useful, but its not so much the electronics im unsure about as the mechanical (ie how much slack the gs mech can take up and what that means in terms of gearing options)

Any reason why you wouldn't just swap to an 11-46 cassette instead? Much cheaper and less faffy to do, retains advantages of 1x and, according to here, the M8050-GS supports it out of the box...

That would be a lot easier i guess...just a bit nervous as the "b" screw is pretty much buried and I don't have much clearance on the 42 as it is

Longer B-screw 🙂 (although I'm surprised that you're hitting it given that the Shimano specs officially support 46t)

Chain length correct? I found mine was way off reaching the largest cog until I shortened (or lengthened?) it enough - worth checking the instructions as the measurement method was different to any other rear mech I'd setup before

1x definitely works with 11-46 if hanger is correct spec.

I ran 26/36 with 11-42 and changed to 34x11-46 1x set up.

If you go 2x, ft mech works with 24/34, 26/36 and 28/38 and rr works with 11-42.

Got the spare XTR double Di2 front mech and both high and low DM adaptors if you want to go 2x?

Thanks all - lots of great info there to digest. I'll check the chain length and hanger!
Oh - silly question; what's a dm adapter? Chaining/bb offset related?

I've got an 11-46 on my Soul and was surprised how little the B-adjuster is screwed in. Working out the right chain length was trickier though.

It's short on high gears though so I've got an 11-51 cassette on order for it (to use with a 36 or 38 up front) which should give it a pretty good range.

LOL, not opening up that again, but on an MTB I'm a convert (recently moved from 2x11 to 1x12 and I'm struggling to think of a single disadvantage at the moment!) and on road bikes I think 1x is a bad idea (for me, anyway) and wouldn't entertain it, due to ratio gaps for long, fast rides.

Each to their own though - you'll find no 1x zealot here!

The only comment I’ll make is that if you have an MTB series di2 rear mech, you MUST use an MTB series front mech, a road won’t work.

DM adaptors are for the 2 Direct Mount standards for mounting ft mechs - High DM as Shimano refer to it is that square block on the seat tube Above the chainring with an M5 hole and a slot. Low DM is what used to be referred to as E-type. Two small threaded stubs above the BB shell. MTB Di2 mechs are only made in one pattern and need an adaptor to convert to the mount type you have - even if band on.
