My bike developed a really annoying rattle today. It appears the cassette has some play in it, so I can wiggle it about a few mm.

Having taken the cassette off, cleaned etc and popped back in, there is still some wobble. Could this be an issue with the free hub? any ideas?

Knackered freehub bearings would be my guess. I assume the axle isn't snapped?

It is surprising how knackered freehub bearings can get before they are totally screwed. I had a hope freehub that started wobbling. When I took it to bits I didn't actually know how many bearings there were meant to be amidst all the swarf.

No snapped axle luckily. I will take it apart and check over the bearings cheers.

No probs. For it to be a noticeable wobble you might find it is a bit of a mess depending on what type of freehub you have. For example, Hope have three sealed bearings, so to have a noticeable wobble means something is fairly broken.

If it is a Hope or another type of freehub that uses sealed bearings, don't immediately go to the hammer and socket/press. I found I could coax the bearings in with grease and thumb power, especially if the bearings have been in the freezer for a bit (minimizing whacking prolongs bearing life)!

It is a DT Swiss hub. Never taken one apart before.

Exact same problem with a brand new set of hope wheels, cassette rings have some play on the free hub. Freehub and all bearings are fine. No noticeable wear on the cassette rings but the play is between the cassette rings and the freehub. I've never experienced this happening before. I tightened up the cassette retaining ring REAL tight and it appears to have sorted out the issue (haven't been out on a spin yet though). Out of curiosity I must put the cassette on a different wheel to see if it's a suspect freehub or if it's the cassette.

@Feed - did you fit the little spacer than came with the hubs? Even 10/11spd cassettes need these otherwise you'll get that wobble.

Spacer that came with the hubs? The issues is definitely fore \ aft play that the cassette rings have on the freehub.

I got this issue half way through the GT7 last weekend, couldn't work out what he rattle was at the time but had a good look today and there is a good few mm of play between the splines on the free hub and the grooves in the cassette. The movement is much more pronounced on the section with the 4 biggest cogs, but the lower bit was moving as well. Stripped it down and cleaned it, no obvious damage to either the freehub or the cassette so did it up proper tight which seems to have held it for now so will see on the next ride.
Never had this before so a bit puzzled.I was messing around with an expander cog a while back (which I subsequently removed) so I wonder if that had something to do with it?

PRO4 hubs need the spacer that's provided with them to stop the cassette wobbling on the freeehub body.
As quoted up there.

Thanks for the info guys. Looks like a call to my LBS required on Monday. Where exactly does this extra spacer go ?

A quick search shows a 2mm spacer that goes on the freehub before the cassette goes on. Off out to the shed now for some investigative dis assembling 🙂

Isn't that because the Hope Pro4 freehup body is made to also accept shimano road 11 speed cassettes which are wider than MTb ones ?

I ve just had something similar.
Turned out it was the cassette that had just developed some play.
Never seen that before but greatful for the (relatively) inexpensive fix.
