Hello All, First time poster here so i'll do a little intro.

Used to live down in Portsmouth and ride a bit of BMX and DH/DJ's a few years ago but slowly spent less and less time on the bike, particularly while I was at Uni and the couple of years since. The only bike I've now got is my Yeti DJ bike (with lots of parts taken off the DH bike - it weighs a ton!) Recently I moved up to St Neots for a new a job and have heard Woburn is probably the closest place to go but I still haven't given it a try, so for the most part I've only got out on trips around Thetford.

I thought its probably about time I put a bit more effort into getting back into it and finding some people to ride with and new places to go. At the same time I've been looking at a new ride, but have been surprised to see 27.5" is the new 26", bikes are 11 speed and steerer widths are different? I think ill probably move back to a full sus Enduro/AM bike that can take a bit of a beating but i'm not sure what to go for. I'm looking <£1500 used for a complete so I think my options would be limited on anything 650b - Is there any advice/direction I should be looking in?

Thanks!

Ah Strava, I heard about that from a friend but thought it was only for running! I'll have a look into it, thanks 🙂 Ill certainly consider the yt. Do you have any opinion on the Commencal Meta AM Origin Bikes. Im looking at all sorts but i'm wondering if some things being marketed as AM/Enduro will truly be up to it.

Any full sus or indeed slack hardtail is up to the job of racing enduro and all mountain. It's the rider that matters 😀

Start by asking yourself what travel you want from the bike. If you're going to use it for the majority of riding inc local trails and xc then think smaller travel, just racing then go large. I have a transtion scout as 95% of my riding is either local trails or park and its geo and travel is perfect for that. If I raced every weekend i'd be on a patrol. If I was richer i'd have both.

From that decision you'll be able to narrow down the bikes then go read a shed load of reviews and get looking on ebay.
I definitely recommend buying new if you dont have a great deal of experience fixing bikes and if you want big travel the YT can't really be beat for price.

Want to learn more about bike maintenance, and don't mind getting your hands dirty get a frame and build it up.

£1500 is a decent budget for a used 650/275 bike - if you are not bothered by wheel size there are lots of us still riding 26 and many used bargains even some old stock new bikes (someone here posted a Yeti for 1500-ish which would have been 6k? back in the day)

Also given your riding history yes agreed get a solid enduro/am bike so you can raz around and hit the jumps. Nukeproof / Cube Sterio used are easily in your budget ? to be honest there is lots of choice
