Just wondering if there are any decent mountain bike routes, say 10 to 20 miles, starting from Richmond on Swale. Nice to have -mainly off road, minimal gates and no killer cows!

Does it have to start from Richmond or could you make it up to Reeth or thereabouts? I guess the obvious choice would be to head out under Whitcliff Scar to Marske, then up to Hurst, then across and down off Fremington Edge to Storthwaite Hall, up north via Langthwaite to Moresdale Ridge and back via Schoolmaster Pasture.
Top section is relatively gate free I think. Can't avoid them in the Dales though.
As above head out of town up Westfields and pick up the bridleway through Whitcliffe Woods towards Marske. Another option is to go through Feldom Ranges when it's not in use. Check here for the timetable. From the Whitcliffe Woods bridleway head up the sealed road to Hurgill Road then take Feldom Lane and cut across to Holgate and then Hurst. Assuming you want to finish the ride in Richmond as well putting those two options together is probably the best bet for a loop within your 10 - 20 miles distance.
