I know I could attach the standard mount to the stem, but all my stems are too short for this to work.
Anyone able to do this with a short stem?
What type of Garmin? The Etrex/Oregon mount won't work with a short stem at all.
Edge Touring. So the mount that came with it is the standard round plastic thing that fixes on (or rather, doesn't) with big O rings.
I mount mine on the top tube on my mountain bikes, as close as I can get it to the steerer. I found mounting on the stem or bars led to the pressure sensor becoming plugged with mud and not giving accurate altitude readings, also on the top tube its less likely to be damaged in a crash. It isn't perfect for navigating or following courses but I'm willing to live with these short comings to have a functioning altimeter and not smashing it in a crash.
I think you can get top caps that have a Garmin mount?
Otherwise, use the standard mount on the top tube or bars, or get an out front <- all the things I do on my MTB where stem is too short for my Edge Touring
Get an out front mount and turn it round. Cheap on ebay if not genuine.
This might be it:
The top cap one is probably ideal but my kids gave me custom designed top caps for christmas... 🙂
I got a Touring on a std mount on a 60mm Thomson stem, the Renthal I fitted instead was the wrong shape so I just flipped an ‘out front’ mount around to run as an ‘out back’.
The k edge gravuty stem top cap works really well. Stem on my larking about bike is 35mm, sonno chance of Garmin on stem. Works really well on cap.
Here you go.
I have a K-edge version and a knock off like this and they are great. you can adjust the angle if you've got a short fat stem, but you may need to jiggle your spacers around.
NB i havent used this particular seller. The one I have, the seller no longer stocks them
I've got a gravity stem top cap and didn't like how high the Garmin sat (especially if you've got any more than a 5mm spacer under the cap.
Much prefer the angled type as post above. On my hardtail I've had it mounted on the top tube but for some reason it doesn't seem to grip the unit very tightly when mounted there and it's far to easy to knock with your knee. Riding yesterday I nearly lost my Touring a few times (and i've had to go back and recover it from the trail once in the past).
I recently bought a stem top cap mount from ebay for £4;71 posted with a choice of colors. Arrived from china in 10 days it has a very positive engagement (tighter than the genuine garmin brackets i have) even came with allen keys and an adaptor to fit a light into the same mount
I run mine on an eBay top cap mount. Really happy with it. Sits on a 10mm spacer for some clearance. No issues with how high it sits.
I got a stem top cap mount from alpkit. Works well.
This mounts above the stem and is very highly recommended...

Bar fly 3.0 does a good job
