I was near Santa Ponsa/Magaluf recently and couldn't find much, think it may depend where your going. I understand riding/hire is better in the north of the island.

You need to head towards the North / North West of the island for the awesome Tramuntana mountain range. There are some wonderful trails - and great roads if you fancy a bit of drop handle bar fun.

In Soller - one of the main towns in the mountains - you'll find Andy at Tramuntana Tours, who both guides and hires. He's listing Spesh FSR hire bikes on his website at the moment. If you're not staying in Soller, it's a popular route for the island buses so is easy and cheap to get to, and the shop's no more than 5mins walk from the bus stop.

I was in Pollenca last month and rented a road bike from Pro Cycle Hire - who whilst a bit more roadie oriented, do have mountain bikes too. You're right at the northerly end of the mountain range there, so a bit further from the action, but it's still very nice around there.

By all means, drop me an email if I might be able to help further - addy in profile. Happy holidays (you lucky sod!)

cheers

I was there with family earlier this year, and there was hundreds of blooming roadies. Looked great for them, but even better for mountain biking.

I was staying north, it looked really flat in the middle.

Next time I'd hire for a morning or two 🙂

You're right, gothandy on both counts. Early part of the year is incredibly popular with pro teams and keen amateurs - the roads are just amazing to ride. The centre of the island is pretty flat - with the odd town on a hill to break it up. The NW coast is where the action's at, and some of the road climbs there are pretty fearsome. Sa Calbora anyone...?!

There are some pretty cool half day and day rides from Soller on the mountain bike though - I'd highly recommend the Barranc de Biniaraix route. Tramuntana Tours will take you up the long road haul, though I've ridden the 12km climb on a full susser before, but it's worth it for the 2.500ft descent down goat tracks through the barranc. Disc rotor fizzing fun!

I had a weekend in the North of the island a couple of years back when my wife was there for a conference and bitterly regret not taking the bike. As mentioned above, some stunning looking trails around Soller. Some nice looking coastal singletrack nearby as well, although I'm not sure how cheeky it is.

You're not wrong there! I recognise the bottom pic (see below) 🙂 - Col de l'Ofre at the top of the Barranc de Biniaraix, if I'm not mistaken, but don't know the other two? The second pic of yours looks stunning!

Also recommend Andy at Tramontana Tours for mtb guiding. Pretty much all of the island is privately owned so access can be tricky if you are trying to find your own way.

The road biking is awesome - I hired a nice carbon road bike from Andy and found it an awesome buzz - so much so I came home and had to upgrade my own road bike!!

Just be aware that if you're on your own, Tramontana aren't really interested in mtb guiding. I was out there last month, I contacted them in advance too, but when I got there they weren't prepared to run a tour without a group of 4 or 5 guys. I totally understand this, they have to make money, but it's worth knowing in advance to avoid disappointment.
I hired a road bike in the end, did a 60km loop then lay on the beach with a beer to recover.. 🙂

I know what you mean heihei, my steel RoadRat feels like an anchor compared to the Cannondale I hired.. 🙂

May look in to getting a road bike for the day or something for the week to tow the 15 month old in may be a better idea, and see the island a bit more.

I've always gotten route advice from Andy but never needed guiding, the topo map is good. Talk to him about access though, as said above.

ps - all 3 pics are on the Barranc route
