Ballet, Highland Dancing.

Wish I'd been smart enough to do those when I were a lad...

Tried horse riding, but once a girl has had a horse, a lad doesn't compare.

Bagpipers seem to attract plenty female attention 🙂

Yes, but they're all nuts. Trust me on that one.

At most of the races we enter, Mrs MTG is the only veteran woman there, so, instead of running a separate category just for her, she gets lumped in with grrls half her age.
She's never going to get a podium that way. 🙁

We get quite a few women on the Wyre Forest rides.
I think women can feel intimidated being on their own with a group of men they don't know.
Once there's one or two regulars, others are more likely to join in.

Generally speaking women don't want to ride bikes. Who are we to try to tell them they're wrong?

What makes you say this? Bit of a sweeping generalisation there - I actually know more men who would rather not bike than women!

The guide on holiday made an interesting observation about couples.

The bloke gets compettative (either pushing himself to impress the missus or keeping up with everyone else).

The missus gets dragged far to far out of her comfort zone.

It all ends in tears, just a matter of who falls first. Which is why you don't get many MTB couples, and those you do see are very evenly matched in terms of skill and speed.

Mrs MTG and myself are a long way from being evenly matched.
There's not much in it down hill, but anything that involves pedalling and I leave her behind.
Usual routine is that I will race on ahead to the top of the hill, turn round and ride back down to her, then repeat until she gets to the top.
I can usually "lap" her about 3 or 4 times.
It's a good system. I get a fast intereval session in, she gets 3 or 4 chances to chase me up hill, yet we still get to ride together despite being of different abilities.

me and the missus aren't exactly at the same level....im not exactly great in any respect! but she's still very new and doesnt ride in the cold so my bike-fitness level is a bit higher due to more riding.

i wait at the top of each hill... i will try MTGs tactic of going back and doing the hills a couple of times so i'm nearer her.. force myself to be fitter.

we need a girl to join our little riding group (2-4 blokes and my missus) i think... but finding a girl as awesome as we are is tricky lol

Are you referring to this year's Swinley Forest Social Networking Ride? Maybe another one next year!

There's certainly more ladies getting into mtb'ing, and not necessarily ones being 'persuaded' by their partners.

I like the cycling back down to meet the lady idea. It means there's a bit of handicapped competition, he can pick a point to cycle back from, the first time back down, he can say how many times he thinks he can "lap" her and she can try and make sure he doesn't make it.

This could work! It's always an issue when you've been waiting for somoeone and you're itching to go by the time they arrive. You've been maxin' and relaxin', they've been working hard. They want a rest, you want to go. So much fairer if you're both working hard for the same amount of time.

It'd be interesting to see how far I'd cover doing this with the lady friend on a SDW ride for example. More than I'd want to, probably, but 101 miles is probably more than she'd choose to do, given more than one option.

Ahhhh we solved that problem by getting a tandem 😆

A tandem is also on the "one day" shopping list.

Had a fleeting crisis of confidence afer I saw the word "handicapped" in my post and this led to a bout of curiosity regarding the various uses of the word.

I came across this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Handicap_principle

Without suggesting that wikipedia is my only verifier of knowledge, or that this is remotely relevant to the OP, I thought it was very interesting indeed.

Donks where is the climbing wall in MK? Do they have climbs marked out already or is it only if you can lead and put it in yourself?

I have spent the last 16 years of my life trying to encourage more women to get into MTBing the majority of my life I have been the sole woman or maybe 2/3 others but never more than that. This year was teh first time ever I had enough to enter a women's team and we did Bristol Bike Fest and came 3rd having messed about, we could've come 2nd if we had paid ANY attention to what we were doing.

I don't understand why more woman don't do it. I guess if you start a new sport older it's harder to gain confidence. So I started at 13 falling off and injuring myself was 2nd nature as you get older it isn't as fun, esepcially if you are new and could easily lose confidence. I met Mr MC at 24 hour race and couldn't think of anything worse than dating someone who wasn't a MTBer. Be careeful with the riding up and down hte hill trick it might really annoy some woman that you are so "fit" if they aren't so much. Either way the blokes I ride know that when I reach the top of the hill I carry on, no stopping for me otherwise they are cold and narky and I don't want that! so constant riding = improves my fitness.

Have I told you all how much I love my bike.......

*generic answer to OP*
Perhaps the problem is not having enough women riding, but 'having enough straight women with low enough standards to find you attractive' ?

Maybe you shouldn't try to actually drag the SO into biking?
Mine cycle. She was keep on getting back into sport/biking when we met. So obvioulsy me being a bike kn0bhead helped a bit.
However, and that is a big one, I don't cycle with her. We ride together a couple of times a week kids depending, but that's it. I don't think it's riding, it's just a social activity with the SO we both enjoy. Like going to the shop, just better. So I don't race her and I ride behind her on the DH part. Am I enjoy the "riding experience" ,well probably not as much as I would on my own. Am I enjoy the time spent outside with her, yes a lot. She rides with other people from time to time. Mostly women I have to admit.

Language course?

When i did Italian at university, we were three lads in a year group of 63. And the other 2 lads weren't interested in girls.

Also any type of dancing. Apparently.

Yes, it could easily be taken the wrong way as me showing off or winding her up.
We both race though, and we both see hill climbing as our weakness, so it's an ideal way for us both to train together at our own pace, while still enjoying the rest of the ride together.

Bit of a generalisation? You mean like I said, the clue was "Generally speaking".

It's true and it's true of most other sports too. Look another generalisation. What's wrong with generalisations anyway? The question can't be answered any other way.

Do you really believe that the reason women do less sport, including mountain biking, than men is for any other reason than that they generally are less inclined towards sport?

Why do you think sport exists and why do you think both sexes should be equally interested in it?

I'm not sure how you would measure this. We know the outcome but the reasons may be hard to tease out of the complex mix. For all we know they may be more inclined towards it but circumstances conspire for this not to be realised.

Why do you think sport exists and why do you think both sexes should be equally interested in it?

I'm not sure sport does exist, it's more of a category of activity, but it contains no inherent discrimination that might favour or appeal to one sex more than the other.

I know some gnarly chics. My friend Anna is pretty damn freeride on any bike you put her on. She is running some female training courses to get the girls some skills. Here is a pic of her clearing a lengthy tabletop at muddy hell on a cx bike. The difference with her is that she started racing really young.

Perhaps if companies were less inclinded to used half naked big busted bimbos to advertise their bikes and parts then women may be more inclined!
In response to the other post about couple. My hubby and I have been rding together for while now, he has been riding his whole life me about a yr properly. I feel I can learn from him and he will push my limits I like it that way though, if you fall at least you know you pushed yourself.

has this actually ever happened ? Apart from a little event sponsorship, I don't think the manufacturers have much to do with day-to-day riding or influencing our perception of mountain biking

Munque-Chick if you are still on this thread the new wall in MK is in Kingston (Big Rock climbing). It has a really decent bouldering zone plus a lead wall area, there are a few top ropes in the main wall as well. It's well worth a visit if you're local.

Donks cheers I've looked it up this morning! Looks awesome, I tend to only go when back in CArdiff and we can go to Boulders. I'm quite excited about a more localish climbing wall. May even book in for some evening sessions to improve my technique etc. Looks ace.
