Following on from the disaster which was upgrading my laptop to w10 I want to return to w7.
However I cannot roll back to w7 via the option in the w10 recovery section.
What is the best way to get my laptop back to a usable state with w7. Nothing works on w10. My laptop is super slow and I am losing my mind with it all.
I am happy to do a clean install of w7. I can save all the stuff I want off my laptop onto a member stick no probs. What confuses me is how I reinstall w7. It came already installed on my laptop so can use that to clean install a fresh copy somehow or do I need to buy a new setup disc etc??
Please can anyone help me out?
Aarrgh wrong forum!!
Depending how long it was since you upgraded, you should have a roll back option somewhere, though not sure where it's supposed to be. After a while the roll back is deleted I think though (30 days?).
Before binning Win 10, have you tried doing a reset on it under the recovery options? It basically reinstalls Win 10. If you back up everything you can pick the option to fresh reinstall and then it won't have debris from the upgrade from Win 7. Though you then have to reinstall applications and restore documents etc. The reset option keeping everything might be worth a try first as could still resolve issues.
Also with Win 10, have you applied all the updates and has the 1511 / November update run? That may fix many issues, although the 1511 update might also remove the Win 7 fall back and only leave you with a fall back to pre 1511. Other thing is check the manufacturer web site to see if they've got Win 10 drivers you might need. Could be without them something is running slow.
Installing Win 7 - if it didn't come with a disc, there may be a recovery option on booting (check manuals) and might be able to restore to factory.
I should technically be able to roll back to w7 as its been a week since the upgrade. However every time I try to roll back nothing happens. I have searched for w10 updates but there aren't any to download.
I will try a factory reset. If I do that, will it go back to the original w7 or stick with w10 as is installed now?
The reset option in Win 10 will reinstall Win 10.
If you have a recovery option on reboot, it may restore Win 7. It depends on having a recovery partition when you got the laptop. This is dependent on manufacturer and you'll need to find out what you need to press on boot to get into the recovery mode, or maybe some other way. Check manuals for the laptop or on the manufacturer web site.
If you do a search online, you should be able to download the Win7 ISO files from Microsoft. You can burn these to a DVD to create a new installation disk. You need to know exactly which version of Win7 your machine currently has. You can then use that disk to access Win7 recovery tools or do a fresh install. You may need the Windows serial number, so good idea to make sure you have that before you start.

More legit Windows ISOs for use if you have a key (which you presumably do)

THanks for the help,
To make it easier for me I have got a new windows installation disc and product key. So do I need to format the computer and then install the new copy of windows 7?
Is it as easy s that or do I need to do more stuff?
My computer is an Asus X53E and it mentions somewhere that I need to download all the drivers for this too. Does this happen automatically?
There are so many guides on line thats its really confusing. Can anyone point me in the direction of a good, simple one for a beginner??
Thanks
Rhid
Does this happen automatically?
Usually, but make sure you have the driver for your network adapter. If you can't get online, you won't be able to download any drivers you need. They should be on your restore disk, but make absolutely sure you have the network adapter driver. I speak from experience on that.
ok.....So I need to save that to a USB or something?
Yes, and note the manufacturer and model number so you can find drivers later if things go wrong.
The manufacturer's driver page for X53E, assuming you will install W7 64bit, otherwise just select the correct OS from the dropdown at the top. Download the drivers you think you will need (the LAN one at the minimum) and save them to an USB drive:
http://www.asus.com/support/Download/3/114/0/12/30/
In some cases there are multiple versions of the same thing - you should download the newest one (see the update date on the right side).
Ok, nice on thanks, I think I get it!
So once its downloaded to the USB, then I can install W7, then I can Install drivers from the USB onto the nice new system? Is that about it?
the drivers are in a EXE format so when I want to install I can just click that, right?
That's about it, yes. I did a clean install onto this and that was pretty much what I did - click on the EXE and it will run an installer which may give you other options, though usually just checking you want to install it and possibly a licence agreement.
Some of the drivers (if not all) on Asus' website are distributed as zip files. You will need to extract them before running the EXE - just copy everything that's inside the archive then paste into a new, empty folder. After the respective driver is installed, delete the folder.
Not just a self-extracting in an EXE, which is the way most of the ones I've seen are?
