This a thing, or will it elicit guffaws of mirth and end up getting poked by a stick.

Yeah, its that deal for a carbon frame. 165mm rear, and the only forks i have suitable would  be the 36 rhythm  or maybe the lyrik which are both 160.

I dont know enough about retro-fitting dampers to know what to get or if it were even possible.

180mm front, 203mm rear.

No dramas here for my little shredder

I’d not worry about the 5mm shorter travel up front. I would be thinking more about the overall geometry if this is the 29er frame you are thinking of mulleting. What travel fork is it designed for and are these 27.5 or 29 160mm forks you are talking about?

Designed for, or rather recommended is 170mm. But I know of many who'll happily up by 10mm any front end.

From what you and Bearback is saying a difference of 5mm isnt going to cause any issues really, 5mm is tiny really, and this is probably just as a spare non ebike for use up some spare forks/wheels/brakes i have.

I think this was a thing way way back.  Some years later I had* a 180mm Patriot with 140-180mm adjustable forks.  I rode it with the forks set to 160 or 170, no issues. Well - I also had to set the shock to its slacker position to avoid the HA being too steep.  In your case you could achieve the same result by running more sag on the shock, if you needed to.  You could also achieve a similar result by moving saddle back and lowering it a touch, and/or running a shorter stem.

You could get a headset lower cup with 10mm extension from Wolftooth, but it's only half a degree steeper on the headtube, less sag front more sag on the rear can sort that. Back in the day it was the norm eg Kona dawg was 150mm with a 140mm fork.

It's quite possible that you can change the air shaft in one or both to make it 170mm travel.

It's only the newest Lyriks which are max 160mm travel IIRC.

If the forks have been used for 50 hours or more, they'll benefit from the lowers service you have to do at the same time anyway. Both Fox and RS are relatively easy jobs and it's well worth knowing how to do the lowers service bit.

With a cascade link my sentinel is 165mm rear, 160mm front. I can’t say I’ve ever noticed because the overall geometry is still correct.

I think most bikes rear travel is measured by arc length. By the time you account for axle path at the rear (arc) vs the front (straight) as well as the angle of movement it really won't matter. Main thing is the geometry at ride height and how the fork affects that, as others said you could adjust with a headset if needed.

Same with my Jones. Maybe a bit more than 10mm measured at the saddle.

My Geometron G1 has 170 up front paired with 175 out back, works pretty well 😀.

I've just built up an Aeris (180) with a 170 fork. No issues here!  The last generation enduro I had before were 165 rear, 160 front as standard.

NEW QUESTION

OK, pretty much the same question. But I do also have a 150mm pike which is 27.5, which i could fit to the 165mm 27.5 frame.

It would solve a number of parts probs, but I want to know if its ok offset wise as the 160mm lyrik is 42mm offset, and my pike is 37mm offset. My initial thoughts about using the 29er fork was the seat angle might end up to steep. and is 15mm a difference too great. 5mm with the 29er fork is minor, obviously it gives the angles and geometry a bit of a pasting, but maybe less so than a 27.5 fork on a 27.5 frame just a bit more of a discrepancy in the F to R travel.

Its a ****ing minefield. What Scotsmen will do to secure a bargain 😆

Which year Lyrik do you have @dyna-ti ?

I have a 170mm air shaft from a Lyrik in my spares box - taken out of a brand new fork. Happy to swap for your 160mm if it's not knackered (and you can be arsed swapping it over)

Its a 2021. But I'd rather not be swopping bits over- no offence.

I know it might solve a problem, but it is a 27.5 and in my original post the frame was 29, which is not available now(Mostly on ebay for £850 🙄  ,and only the less popular 27.5's are available now.

But thanks for the offer all the same 🙂

OK, bought the Nukeproof.

Having a 2nd bike as spare isnt such a bad thing, especially if the ebike needs to go back, or such and i'd be stuck for a bike.

And I've most of the parts to build it up -fork,rear wheel, brakes, carbon bar and post, all of which are also new. Just need to come up with a front wheel and drivetrain.

Thank you all very much for the advice 🙂
