I seem to struggle with searching for the correct thru axles (I still haven't found the correct front one for my bike) and now need one for the rear of my wife's Topstone. It's cross threaded slightly, I think from where the mech hanger was loose and started to screw the axle in without it lined back up properly. It still works but was a real struggle to undo just now to swap wheels over.

Anyway, I need to find one of these with that is chamfered / tapered under the head, most are flat and I'm failing.

12x142 160 long 16.5 thread P1.0 pitch. Ideally one with an adjustable position lever but just an allen head is fine.

Thanks!

Maybe this - https://www.wiggle.co.uk/brand-x-bolt-thru-axle-2

Option 2 from the description list...not exact same but close...although thread pitch may be the issue.

+1 for this looking like the Syntace standard. Probably worth getting the frame axle thread chased out while you're at it too.

Syntace X12

You can get a WolfTooth one for £50, Syntace about 30e (but out of stock), KCNC about £23

You do get X12 with 1.5 threads as well as 1.0, so check carefully.

If it's Syntace X12 (would need to see the ends) DT swiss do standard bolts and QR lever versions. So do Specialized and loads other own branded ones.

Novatec

I use one for a Spec Stumpy/Camber in a Cube Stereo. Cube do own branded one's but the Spec one was cheaper at the time!

Aha, Syntace appears to be the missing bit of info I needed So thanks very much 👍

This is on Cannondale spares site so probably the direct replacement. It is listed as adjustable lever, despite the picture not having a lever…

And lever version here: https://www.cannondalespares.com/Cannondale-Ratchet-Lever-Syntace-142x12-165mm--K83058/product_detail/3-43247

Although it’s 165 long so it might bottom out the thread too soon and not do up tight.

Ordered the DT Swiss one with removable lever, hopefully it’ll fit as it’s 2.5mm longer, I think it’ll just stick out slightly.

Didn’t want another Cannondale one as it seems a bit soft.

The picture above appears to confirm its syntace x12. There is x-12 right in the middle of the markings. Really wish more bikes came fitted with this as its as really nice setup.

@nixie I wish all bikes just came fitted the same axles.

Surely we can just standardise one for each hub width?

Why do you rate this one, so far my experience of it is that it’s susceptible to cross threading (yes it was probably the fault of a loose hanger but still) and is made of cheese, which might just be a Cannondale issue.

We have a gravel bike each and both run the same hub spacing but both have different axles.

The hangers and simple and small. They are really easy to attach. All the parts are replaceable, the hanger, the bolt that holds it on and the threaded insert in the frame that the axle screws into (meaning cross threading will not ruin a frame). The syntace version of the axle also has a blunt rubber pointed end that guides the axle on insertion. Finally you can replace the end with a small tool (with the syntace axle).

To be fair on the cheese point almost all axles are alloy so will be similar cheese grade.
