You seem to think that there is an official English language with which to ****. There isn't.

"It's an older word, sir, but it checks out. I was about to clear them".

Archaic - 'demolished'

^^^ yeah, first citation in the OED is from 1602!(so not a recent mangling unless OP is really old 😉)

interestingly they say

This word belongs in Frequency Band 2. Band 2 contains words which occur fewer than 0.01 times per million words in typical modern English usage. These are almost exclusively terms which are not part of normal discourse and would be unknown to most people.
so one can be excused from not knowing it but should probably be thanking the author of the news article for the education rather than castigating them 😃

Happy to see Maindy demolished. It's not very good, really. The facility they've got planned in the Bay looks much better.

I think it was Douglas Adams - anyway I like the idea that we should give obscure words a bit of an airing from time to time. I have little chance to do this, the emphasis where I work is on combining both brevity and clarity (more of a skill than you would think)

Methinks that the fact that the word the author chose to use turned out to be a real one was more due to good luck than to good wordiferousness on their part.

Perhaps JRM, Minister for Victorian values, has his kids on work placement at the BBC?

I’m glad Barney pointed it out as I had absolutely no idea what word wasn’t supposed to be a word. Even my dyslexia has heard of demolishment.
