Not expecting many replies to this one but here goes:

I have 130mm QR rear hub on my rim brake gravel bike.

The frame is a 132.5mm OLD affair so can take 135mm or 130mm.

Now that I realise how easy it is to swap end caps, I feel I should try and space the hub for 135mm instead of 130mm, will open the chainstays a tiny bit, improve tyre clearance and satisfy my OCD.

Am assuming the new end caps would add the extra 5mm to the non-driveside? Any other approach would muck up chainline?

Does the 130mm hub share the same shell as the 135mm? I'd have thought the extra width was more likely to be in the hub shell than spacers.

I don't know about the hub shell, but the spacers exist to go from 130mm to 135mm, so it's obviously an accepted modification to make.

I think I'll take a punt on them and gamble that the extra 5mm is all on the non-driveside, I can't imagine them deliberately spacing the cassette more inboard.

Yeah, one of the things that got me thinking was that the wheel is already a bit out of dish, e.g. about 1mm closer to the non-driveside chainstay. Changing end caps could kill 2 birds with one stone e.g. save me having to dish the wheel properly and buy me a tiny bit more clearance (...about 0.5mm. now I bother to draw it in CAD...). Of course, if both chainstays splayed equally then it will be barely noticeable, but still an improvement. Also saves me having to wind the QR in as much, it's a bit bodgy at the moment as you basically have to close the dropouts 3 or 4mm by winding the QR against them until they hit the locknut of the hub.

I think I'll just do it for that reason alone, feels like the frame really needs a 135mm hub in there. Can only improve the current situation.

Bwu-hahahah, it worked! it worked!

Just updating for posterity/future searches really, but after eyeballing some adaptors on the SJS Cycles website and asking them to measure one for me to check it was 5mm longer than my existing non-driveside adaptor, I took a punt on DT Swiss adaptor HBDT990, otherwise known as 'rear 135mm Q/R hub spacer'.

It pops straight onto hub and gives me a surprising amount of additional tyre clearance, easily 2 or 3mm, which might save me the cost of a new, narrower tyre. Who knows, it might even improve chainline a tiny bit.

Overall, OCD well and truly satisfied 🙂
