I have been using Bontrager Rhythm TLR wheels with Schwalbe tubeless ready tyres and they work brilliantly. They require very high pressure to seat but seal very easily and barely need any sealant.
I'm in the market for a new wheelset for a new build and was looking at Stans rims. The first thing I noticed is the large quanitiy of sealant required compared to Bontrager which will obviously add to the weight + mess. I assume this is due to stans being designed to work with non tlr tyres? Would I use less sealant when using tlr tyres? Also there seem to be many complaints and difficulties with sealing, burping etc etc. What makes Stans so popular vs systems such as Bontrager TLR? should I even consider it or just stick with what I know and try and source some Bontrager rims from somewhere?
Cheers
Dan
I have used Bonti rim strips on various wheels including Bontis. I have had varying ease/difficulty seating the tyres - mostly OK with a compressor and a good resounding ping as the bead goes home.
No burping and good resistance as you try to break the bead when changing tyres.
My latest wheels are Arch EX. Yellow tape and a tubeless valve.
Only had one set of tyres on them so far - Bonti XR4 & MudX - but they went up with a track pump SO easily and seated themselves. Very light.
I would say that the amount of sealant is down to the type you use and the porosity of the tyres you have. Not the rim.
I didn't get on with the Bonti stuff and use Joe's.
Ah thats interesting to hear.. I had assumed the sealant had a part to play in creating the initial rim seal with the Stans system and thats why so much was needed.
Yeah the getting the tyres to mount evenly on the rim often needs up 80psi which is a bit scary. The other downside with Bonti is that once this seal is formed and the tyre is popped into the strip it can be near enough impossible to get off again!
I have various schwalbe tyres - Hans Dampf, NN and RR and as these are so bloody expensive I want to make sure they will run on the new wheels..
