I would like a mountain bike shoe that looks a bit more like a road shoe, and that allows me to walk on a polished corridor floor without too much difficulty. All for <£50.
Any suggestions?
So a cheap XC shoe then: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/shoes-cycle/shoes-mtb?f=2258&pf=&pt=50
Shimano do some touring-type shoes for recessed SPD cleats model RT32 or 33
I have Giro Republics which are SPD compatible, lace up, made of the most fragile material ever, have stupid rubber heal and toe bits that wear out quicker than my tyres and cost £130. Don't get those, they're crap.
No need to thank me...

There was some fancy DMTs on CRC with a carbon sole for around that price; nearly bought a pair.
Instead, I bought a pair of the road shoes which seem pretty good for £40. They size up pretty small though, I bought 45.5 (last pair of DMTs I have were this size) but they were far too tight so I've sent them back for a 46.
Northwave do a few: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/northwave-jet-365-evo-mtb-shoes-2016/rp-prod149560?gs=1&gclid=CMiy14HM79ECFUOT7QodVtMATw&gclsrc=aw.ds if you're a size 42 or 47, or
Start Cycles/ Fitness may be your friend - they do Scott shoes cheap, sometimes very cheap.
I have a pair of Gaerne's from CRC that are holding up well after a couple of years too.

What size are you? I have some 44s unworn that would work.
But an XC shoe is what you want, assuming you want to use SPDs.
