Evening all, I posted a while back regarding an issue with stans fluid, won't bore you all again but basically the stans was in my tyre for 3 months and had turned into a hard almost perfect rubber ball. Just been out to change my tyres and found this "growth" in one....it was a brand new hans damf fitted about 3 months ago. Anyone seen similar? I am not sure if the fluid has sepparated into component parts or what???
I know people who leave stans in for 6 months + and if this is happening, is the white fluid that's left actually doing anything (ie has all the rubber compound formed the monster leaving the carrier fluid behind?).
Don't know what it is, but it's totally normal, or at least mine always does it. Doesn't seem to matter, I guess it's the particle stuff that's supposed to fix punctures glomming together? But the fluid still works.
has it plugged a hole at that postion, mine loks like that when it has
yeah loads of times, think it's cause by a "seed" piece of mud/thorn or something which collects the latex layering up over time.
Don't be alarmed. Critters will grow in the Stans fluid over a period of time. 'tis normal.
Yeah it does seem to work fine so you are prob right that it's a normal thing. Guess I am just worrying as had a bad stans fluid (or lack of) failure during my commute a few weeks ago! (not helped by forgetting my pump 3 miles into swinley which I am still recovering from).
Ok cool 🙂 thanks - may start collecting the critters, this one looks kind of funky close up! I will call him Dave.
There was a view that using CO2 cartridges was the cause of these but I have seen them when not using CO2 as well so it cant be that.
After topping up fluid through the removable valve core a couple of times, I pulled this out of my back tyre!
Total guess that the valve was at the bottom of the wheel with the liquid when the tyre was pumped up and that might do something strange, not used the stuff myself, so only a guess
Gravity haaa brilliant! Did you feel any imbalance with that bad boy in the wheel?
What's his name, gravity-slave?

Why do you keep a pasty in your tyre 😉

The use of CO2 speeds up the process of breaking down the mixture, creating these buggers as they are known. The CO2 reacts with the chemistry of the fluid and I believe breaks down the ammonia or what ever helps to keep the sealant stable. I have stolen all this very basic knowledge from another thread about sealant .
Topping up without cleaning the old stuff out makes it worse,. allegedly.. The new stuff reacts with the old stuff and breaks down faster,
Allegedly....
Gravity did you not notice that when riding or did it not make a noise?
I've been using Stan's for many years and never had a monster or even a booger in one of my tires! I feel left out... 😥
Is gravity's photo not just a rag he has used to wipe out all the bits?
spooky - no, the photo is of a lump of solid latex/sealant!
I noticed when I was doing my gears and spun the back wheel up with the bike on the stand. It was jumping all over the place so I popped the tyre off. I think it weighed nearly 100g*!
Definitely my best, I have found smaller ones similar to the OP before.
That'll teach me to be lazy with my tubeless.
*I left it on the kitchen scales when I went to refit the tyre and my Mrs was a bit freaked out by it!
My theory is it forms the spiders web on the inside fo the tyre as it starts to dry out after 2-3months, then eventualy it peels off and rolls into a ball after abotu 3 months.
I have a collection of these on my window sill. I'm pretty sure it is all the bits of rubber that float in the solution to help it seal. I let one get pretty big and there were no little bits left in the remaining solution, so I think they are a Bad Thing, and remove them as soon as I can hear them.
"Argh! Little monsters have emerged from my Stan's fluid!"
I can't help but think if you'd brought them up properly you wouldn't have gotten yourself into this predicament 🙄
I never used to get them using proper tubeless tyres, but started noticing them when I switched to tubeless ready. I also think that was about the same time that the formula was changed to make it more environmentally friendly.
You dirty tubeless b******s
🙂
Stans Sprites.
They are wise creatures, line them up on the shed windowledge and use their peaceful presence to clear your mind before a ride.
Strangely I only seem to get these in in my Spesh tyres; I left a Maxxis tyre on the rim for almost 12 months and no monsters had formed.
I assumed it was something to do with the tyre but perhaps I am wrong!

Ditto. 10 years using Stans and never had this. I top up old fluid with new too.
