So I've been procastinating over this one for a while, I want a fatter tyre for my Salsa Vaya that will offer a bit more grip than the WTB All Terrain tyres I have at the moment.

The current tyres have a very close tread pattern with a near continuous centre strip, all well and good but it doesn't take much for them to break out on grassy/muddy climbs. I don't expect MTB tyre performance but I think I could definitely do better.

The WTB Nanos are only a little fatter (40c vs. 37c) but have a better spaced tread pattern with more little paddles than the All Terrains.

The Kendas are fatter still, have a very paddly looking tread pattern, but apparently Kenda tyres have quite a sluggish feeling compound?

I might just try one of each, Kenda front, Nano rear, but am interested to hear opinions!

Got Nano Race 40s on my CX bike at the moment. A true 40mm, feel good on 19mm rims at 35-40 PSI. Great on loose dry ground, a little squirmy at speed on tarmac due to the flexy or thin raised tread design. Averagely good in the mud (what little I've had to ride them on this summer) but I doubt as effective as a real mud tread. A very good wide-ranger though.

That's good to hear, I'm not expecting miracles in the mud, if I was serious about long muddy climbs etc. I'd need to do something about the gearing first...

Don't know if there's any point in that center strip on the WTBs (for me anyway), could go all DH racer and cut them off, give myself a little more bite on the climbs...

Got Thunder Burts on my Peregrine. 52mm knob to knob. Nice if you've got room for them. Cheapish from Rose bikes.

Interesting, hadn't seen those before. I think 52mm is pushing the limits of my clearance, and the Thunder Burts look like quite a close tread spacing when I'm really looking for a slightly more open tread. Thanks though
