As the title - i know that the cable pull is different on the old MTB front mechs and STI so it was not possible (or not very useable) to mate a triple or double Shimano MTB front mech to a Shimano STI lever.

But i have seen a few photos - mainly here:

http://www.bikerumor.com/2015/08/30/eb15-litespeed-builds-kuwa-adventure-road-bike-plus-lightweight-sl-versions-of-t1-pinhoti/

That seems to suggest that one of the new XTR or XT side swing front mechs will work with a STI lever

Again the 2x11spd shimano road groupset now come with a different design front mech suggesting that the newest STI levers either pull a different amount of cable?

Any ideas or anybody tried it?

Could you not alter the swing by packing the cable clamp area?
That's what I am planing to try with an XT chainring, front mech and STI.
The build won't be for a while so post here how you get on please 🙂

Tried that already on a xt front mech. Triple STI lever from a 10 speed ultegra groupset and it takes all 3 clicks to move the front mech enough only for 2 chainrings

I've a custom crosser that can race or be set up with big tyres. For non race I have gone with a single ring option and a lindarets road link which enables my short road mech to handle a 11-40 cassette. Running a 40n/w up front, its pretty sorted. I have even run a 36t up front for big long days in proper hills/mountains with a bit of luggage. Ditch the front mech.

Thanks and nice looking bike

But I'll keep the mech I've got 42/28 and 11/36 which is prefect for everything on or off road and touring with bikepacking bags or small panniers

There are other solutions to pair Shimano 2x or 3x road sti shifters with Shimano MB FD eg Jtek Shiftmate 7 but I suspect you already know that?

I do know about the jtek, but the side swing if it works gives you a lot more, extra tyre clearance (very useful in a monstercross), and no adaptor means less chance for dodgy shifting if the cable pull is the same

I suspected as much. I moved to 1x11 on both Fargos for those reasons
