If it's like the High Peak trail which it joins, it's very picturesque, but flat, boring, and busy on sunny days.

yeah its old railway lines so flat and boring. they used to hire town bikes (Sturmey Archer 3 speed) for the purpose. More for families and sightseers, certainly not 'Mountain' biking.

As I understand it, the trail itself can be ridden on, but it's in several pieces as the tunnels that connect them are all closed, and the linking sections are footpaths...

The only exception to that is at Monsal Head, which has a BW running up to the top, and a little road, but they are 'quite' steep, and would be a push for a beginner.

I'd suggest that doing a loop on the Tissington/High Peak trails would be a better alternative.

Is the beginner fit?
If so you could try the Whaley Bridge into Buxton loop. They/he/she can walk the only tricky bit (it's quite rocky in one downhill section). I did it on my first ever mtbike ride. Not being fit spoilt it for me.
