Planning to do this route on Sunday:

https://cateranecomuseum.co.uk/itinerary/monega-pass/

The descent off Monega looks better on MTB, the rest probably a gravel ride. Which bike to take?

There was a feature on it in issue 138 "monega road". He said a gravel bike wasn't appropriate, and did it on a Mason InSearchOf which seems to be a gravel bike with big tyre clearance, with 2.25" Rocket Rons, and didn't regret it. And that he could have done with a lower gear ratio.

I'd go on from Little Glas Maol to Cairn Of Claise and take the baggers path to Tom Buidhe, then head SSE on a path (initially faint) to join the loop above near Finalty Hill. I think it would be borderline doing that on a gravel bike.

Monega north face, shame the crazy stalker's path has more or less disappeared into the hillside...

I went to try it. It's there at the top but has disappeared into the grass in the lower half. It's pitched around 40 degrees in angle so you feel like you or your bike will go the distance if you make one mistake! Someone needs to pay a visit with a matock and shovel.

You rode down "most" of that!

You can also descend this:
down Monega’s north face (without the snow of course!) The path is rather I’ll defined in places and the hillside gradient of nearly 40deg does rather put one off one’s stride; I did ride most of it though and I’m a mincer!

We did the route more or less as described in the link in the OP. Did an extension to Clas Maol, which was worth it.

We didn’t do your high route in the end chickenman, but thanks for the suggestion.

For anybody stumbling upon this thread looking at doing this the answer is MTB all the way. Would have been pretty miserable on my gravel bike and anything but the most MTB of the gravel scale.

Highlight was Auchintaple loch at the end, glorious.
