Any good? I've seen an entry level spec one with alu frame and fox 32 forks heavily discounted brand new. Worth a punt?
Yes. But I would say that cos I've got one. Got mine heavily discounted from Evans and I absolutely love it, mines the xr though with the 160 fork. On the ups it's ok, considering the short stem and slack head angle (no where near as slack as some) but it's no whippet. Point it down and it just seems to want to go faster and faster, cornering is a breeze, it seems to corner easier than my previous bikes with minimal weight transfer which took a bit of getting used to.
I've got one in 26er mode and absolutely love it. Gone from bike to bike but can't see me swapping this now
Yes, great bikes, but fragile. The bearings are notoriously poor quality, mine lasted a mere 2 months before seizing which resulted in a cracked rear triangle. Sorted under warranty, but worth knowing.
If you do buy one I would absolutely recommend you change the bearings for high quality Enduro Maxx bearings from new, you'll get a much longer life out of them and the bike is well worth taking the time to do it.
My brother has a foxy r and its a great bike, really good fun. If its got a whacking discount on it as well you can't go wrong really
Great bike, I have a 26" XR with 160 forks and as already said above it flys downhill! Climbs fine too but I was used to dragging around an Intense Tracer 2 with DH tyres on 😉
I bought mine second hand in March and have not had to replace the bearings and I have ridden it plenty!
One of the guys I ride with has one too and he usually rides with 140mm Fox forks on and for Alps trips/ uplifts he pops a pair of Lyriks on.
Foxy's are one of the nicest feeling 140mm bikes out there ride a bit different to others because of the forward geometry but great bikes. They do have a reputation for cracking but the never known of issues with silverfish or Mondraker honoring warranty claims. The only thing that would put me off is the fox 32's. I'd want at least a 34mm stanchion which the 2016 base model were kitted with. If it helps I know of a large ex-demo for sale for £1500.
The spec says fox 32 but the picture shows 34s - it's a 2016 model here.
I haven't heard about cracking problems and I've managed to crack almost every non-steel frame I've had (plus a cromo bmx).
That's the model with 34's so I think the spec must be wrong but I'd check before you press go! It was the rear triangle that had issues on the older 650b models although not heard of any 2016 breakages yet. They ride incredibly well though and I'd have one for sure (or a dune) If I didn't like Transition's so much.
Motocard in Spain have quite a big chunk off Mondrakers at the moment too.
Love my Foxy (2015 XR), have managed to crack the rear triangle once but silverfish swapped it right away and new one is slightly redesigned as its a 2016 version so you should be fine. Regarding bearings if your creative with duck tape or moto foam you can make them last a little longer. Although thanks for reminding me should check them on my frame now.
New bearings are like £10 for a set so not a deal breaker and are easy to swap out after you've done it once and know what to do.
Cheapest Foxy in medium motocard
Invest in threadlock too, for the self-extracting bolts.
The bearings aren't well shielded but they also seem to be supplied with cheap junk, if you put decent stuff in its place it should last longer
Firstly - do it! The Foxy is an amazing bike.
In my position (at Silverfish) I have the ability to jump on multiple top-end bikes but the Foxy is my personal bike of choice. I've used mine for enduros, marathons and even XC races. The only thing I can see me changing it for is another Foxy!
The bearings have had significant upgrades in the last year, however, they're still not the most high-end version you could select. However this is a conscious decision from Mondraker.
Their take is that bearings are consumable - they WILL wear out. As such you can stare down the barrel of £150 for a replacement set as some brands charge (that might last two years) or you accept they will wear out anyway and pay £29.95 for a set from Silverfish/your local dealer.
Worth note is that even at this price bearings are still warrantied for 12months so if they fail inside that time you can get your supplying dealer to replace them FOC. Although that is harder for you if you buy from overseas of course.
In terms of the back ends - again, if you look at the evolution of the Foxy you can see how the rear ends have changed to add more stiffness and strength over the years.
I know you lot won't believe me but our returns rate on all Mondrakers is tiny.
Again worth note - Mondrakers have a lifetime warranty on the frames for the original owner so even if you are still worried you always have the security of knowing that to fall back on.
Although, I won't miss another opportunity to say that the warranty is held with your supplying dealer so buying overseas could make a claim tricky/long winded 😉
Loved mine, I had a Special Edition Foxy Carbon XR for 18 months and found it bloody awesome going downhill, with a 160mm Fox 36 up front it felt pretty much invincible. Only sold it as was a bit more bike than I needed in terms of capability and spec and needed the cash for a new house so it had to go if you have the terrain to play to its strengths they're incredible bikes.
