Bring money for beer
…and next week, in an unprecedented example of forward planning, Sabden.
I sincerely hope to see you there!
Guess I'd better sort out a route. I'm resisting the urge to take everyone on an ascent of Penny Steps 😈
Last time we went there we got told off for parking in the pub car park, even though it's massive, so if you can park on the road, there's quite a bit of room. Don't worry though if you can't. I'll pop in at the weekend and give them some warning.
Is Harry going to christen his bike properly by trying to out-do his epic, spectacular, catapaulted launch into a ditch just before the pub
Happy days. Being hauled out of a ditch by Chipps and going to pick up the bike at his feet, only to be told that mine was actually some considerable distance (visible on Strava) away.
It too a good few minutes for the “tweetie birds” in my head to disappear.
I think I’ll try and avoid a repeat.
If he does he'll have to do it on a different descent as I wasn't planning on going down that one again. Don't worry though, there'll be plenty opportunity for falling off 🙂
And in case I scared anyone off earlier, can I clarify that we won't be going up penny steps. I fear if we did I'd be the only one to turn up.
Provisionally I'm in with a space in the van...
Just finished putting the boat away, having a beer under the Acropolis in 42 degrees bloody hot 8) Due home Sunday hopefully make it on Monday especially as it's local.
When I go on holiday in a couple of weeks I'll be sure to send similar updates 😀
On it. Hopefully two of us heading over from Heptonstall...
Sorry I won't be able to make it this week as I will be on a paddy airline on my way to the south of France.
Baza
Baz **** off......
If I manage to make it, it will be a last minute job. It's been a rather busy 7 days.
i'm not sure yet, manflu has knocked me for 6 and my chest/breathing is still a bit goosed. doubt i can cope with the ups around there...
Well it's not due to rain today and everything was drying out quite nicely yesterday so the trails should be dry, if not dusty. There's a fair amount of technical and rocky singletrack on this one so those who are that way inclined might want to break out the elbow and kneepads to save some precious skin 😉
I'll see whoever turns up later.
Should be there on the new bike - maiden voyage! Its all sparkly new...
Hmm... If I break a wrist the week before I go away my wife will kill me and all of you also. And your neighbours and their pets.
Everything up round the Pike and Penny Steps was mostly dry and sandy yesterday. Hopefully see you all later.

It's pretty much the same route as the one we did last year but a different final descent, which is easier IMO, so you'll be fine as long as you don't go launching yourself into a ditch like last time.
Customers only in the car park, just ask for lime and water for your camel back 🙂 looking FW to this, I was up there yesterday its running well.
Customers only in the car park
I'm sure we'll be ok if the first person to arrive goes in and has a word saying that we'll all be back later for a pint.
What is the route for Sabden please? I may be motivated to repair the snapped spoke I discovered in order to make that evening rather than thinking "those are quite near to me I should go" every week!
Thanks
J
What is the route for Sabden please?
Dunno. Gaze is our Wing Commander for this one.
Last time we were up there we did this...

Thanks, I'll have a look at that. I usually ride around the "Big End" 🙂
The first and last bits of that Sabden route were brilliant. The middle involved me breaking a seat clamp, a climb that felt eternal, and Gaz screaming "Don't follow me!" from the bottom of a hill 😀
I've ridden up "the Nick" a fair few times on a road bike but not MTB. If I can fix my wheel before then I'll try and come along. If nothing else I'll find a new local trail or 2.
Bit of a change of plan at my end i'm afraid. Not going to be able to get up to Tod tonight though i may try and get out locally and have a quick ride to see how it performs.
Have a good one!
I won't ruin my chances by saying I'll make it. Even if it is very close to home. I've a feeling we've "things" that need doing round the house.
An early turn out for me tomorrow a.m and a big drive means I'm out although I might see what Craig's up to.
I'll be there.
Me too.
Me too 😉
I was beginning to worry from the trickle of cry-offs if there was a weather forecast I hadn't seen but a look out the window confirms it's still dry.
Alright, I'm in! Assuming nothing ridiculous happens between now and half seven that is. And if it does I might just gaffer tape the seven year old to my camelbak and come anyway...
I'll be bringing up the rear...
It's training in Hebden
We'll probably all survive Sam 🙂
I didn't :/
Neither did I.
Good 🙂
Eeer, I mean, well, you must've, it seems....
(Thumbs a lift out of the thread)
Thanks for a decent ride
hope the rib is ok. ( didn't catch your name, sorry )
I have lost my gloves, did anyone pick them up by accident.
They are black... err like most cycling gloves 🙂 specialized brand.
Now, sods law dictates that I will fall of anytime soon and gash my hands 🙂
These gloves, it transpires I kidnapped them, must have grabbed them by mistake in the hurry to catch the train. Sorry.
I'm in Bradford - how can we fix this?
By post?
....just a thought.
Of course, but I thought I heard Steve say he came to Bradford or something sometimes.
No worries, I used to live in Bradford, I sometimes can be found in Judy Woods 🙂 or near the Ski sloop
If you're visiting somewhere in the middle anytime soon maybe then maybe we could meet. Or just post them if that's the easiest way.
I thought it was the 'more than one pint' that had made me put them down somewhere silly 🙂
Thanks
Glad the gloves surfaced in the end. That must have been the shortest MNPR distance-wise in history. Hope the bruises aren't too bad Harry. Think I'll cross that descent off the list for future night rides.
There were various people asking about the Hebden thursday rides. If anyone's interested there's details [url= http://singletrackmag.com/forum/topic/heptonstallhebden-bridge-riders ]here[/url] of how to join the mailing list.
Good ride that. Good to get out on a bike in decent weather again... 😀

It was a belter. The sunset through the wind farm was stunning.
Hey - Steve, can you email me [check my profile] and we'll sort it out.
Ta
Seems every ride up there Harry ends up yards away from the actual trail without his bike for one reason or another... 😀
I was just checking if my shoes were waterproof.
I genuinely didn't mean to get you in that, but I was pressing the shutter release with my nose [gloves] and I must have slightly changed angle, sorry.
Hows the thumb/chest anyway?
Sore.
Are you sure nothing is broken?
Yeah. My feet didn't get wet.
Great pictures guys!
Someone mentioned another decent that takes you all the way to the bottom (eg, canal level not Shepherds Rest level )
Were does this decent start? Or what's it called on Strava? I am hoping to-do it this lunch time.
Thanks
Edit - Is it 'Top Banana' starts near the Top Brink
That's the one. It's nice but short. I wish it didn't turn into a straight line made of gravel as it gets to the rubbish tip, but the section before that is good, a little less techy than the Stoodley sheep trail.
If I can find my spare gloves, I will do it now 🙂 my wife put them in a safe place never to be seen 🙂
MNPR kleptomaniac reporting: just off to post your gloves back 😀
You be careful at that Post Office. No picking fights this time. 😀
Some great pictures from Monday - shame to have missed it!
But i'm back in the game and mobile again so i will be out next week. Is the plan still to do Sabden? Hope so it was great last time - in fact its one of my top 3 MNPR's of 2015 so far!
In no particular order:
Sabden 23rd March
Ramsbottom 6th April
Littleborough 18th April
For anyone thinking 'ooh its a bit far on a Monday night, it wasn't much further (both in time and mileage) of heading to Littleborough or Tod (from the Manchester area).
Yes there is some climbing but it was really great nevertheless!
Sabden is on.
Details tomorrow.
Steve is our leader.
That must have been the shortest MNPR distance-wise in history.
Alas not Daz. Silver medal i'm afraid.
You squeezed in a massive 10.5km which failed to beat the record held by Binners (2015 only) whose ride amassed a staggering 9.9km on 2nd Feb. Despite its brevity, it was a great ride (Intersteller Sheep Trail et al) and topped of with chip butties in the Rose & Crown half way up The Rake...
[farawaylook]Ahhhh....The famous snow ride[/farawaylook]
Thanks for sending the gloves back 🙂
Alas not Daz. Silver medal i'm afraid.
Have you got a spreadsheet of these or something?
now that would be particularly sad and geeky wouldn't it....
Is that a yes then?
Bugger, is Sabden this monday? I really wanted to do this one as I am nearby, but i am running a kids cricket match. Time to start looking for a stand in umpire
yes
At the outset of the year I started to pen an article about what makes a ride enjoyable. There seems to be many contributing factors and i was quite keen to see if there was a pattern emerging. i kept a lot of stats regarding weather, gradient, numbers on rides, exertion, fluidity etc but the overall 'wow factor' of a ride didnt necessarily correlate with the obvious.
For example, some of my favorite rides of the year were the coldest or wettest. Maybe involved the most climbing or finished with a chip butty (no brainer).
As a result i have a large spreadsheet, detailing attendance (or lack of) which throws up some interesting stuff, even if it totally fails to identify what makes a good ride!
Ooh, we really must discuss the modifications I have made to my PC this week for the sake of overcoming the problems I have had with managing airflow for SLI Geforce 970's on a motherboard where the only PCIe x16 slots are separated by only a single slot. I utilised a PCIe extension cable and some interesting bodges with a set of standoff mounts to mount the card over the next PCI slot by raising the card up.....
^^ That's not just dull, it's barely English.
