After last week’s spectacular “can’t-be-arsed-fest” we’ll have another crack at Mordor*

The Wine Press, Hollingworth Lake. OL15 0AZ
8:15 Blast Off
Bring money for beer

Parking can be a bit of an issue outside the pub, but there is plenty of space at the visitors’ centre about 150m further along the lake side road.

*If ground conditions are too claggy we’ll do the hard pack route around Piethorn Reservoir.

EEK! I'd already started another thread. Premature again. The story of my life...

I'm in. Will bring a bike and a worryingly extensive knowledge of Lord Of The Rings.

and a worryingly extensive knowledge of Lord Of The Rings

If you think that'll pay your way in the wine press you may be in for a shock. I'd take some beer money as a back up plan.

I plan on seeking approval from "She Who Must Be Obeyed". I'll report back (assuming my head is still attached to my shoulders - Binners has met her, albeit in slightly unusual circumstances, he'll back me up) in due course..

I dunno, I reckon there's a fair chance someone will give me beer to stop me reciting the high kings of Numenor at them after not very long at all...

Walked up there last night. Generally very dry.

I will join one of these MNPRs one day when I stop breaking things.

In a cruel twist of fate, I've come down with a f****** flu bug just as the sun's come out. Should be ok by monday though, when no doubt it'll be raining again by then.

Will there be time to do the Whitehouse extension?

The reason it's like this in Rochdale is because the Gods know I will be nowhere near my bike until a week on Mon (unless this Mon's network review meeting fails to drag on past 1100, by some miracle). The monsoon will undoubtedly arrive before then.

I hardly ever post on the forum and I've never been on a MNPR before, although I've admired the enthusiasm from afar. However, Binners says I probably won't die, it's (almost) on my doorstep and it might even be dusty, so I'm planning on joining you for this weeks ride if that's alright? Go easy on the noobie please!

Turn up. Say hello.

Nobody gets dropped and the pace is moderate.

So that you can recognise us, Me and Binners look like this.

Actually HtS an old pic I recently saw of binners bears an uncanny resemblance to Siegfried ....

It would be wrong of me to find it and post it...

Wouldn't it?

I'm thinking a coffee table book of binners MNPR posters would be a great charity fundraiser ❓

HtS - That is genuinely scary.

Bregante - I think I know the pic you mean. It is considerably more scary......

...although Terrahawk did make it into the Guinness Book if Records for riding a tandem to the moon in 24 hours, so we barred him.

Something tells me tonight is going to be a classic. Is anyone not coming out? If we make good time we could probably fit in the Rakewood singletrack as well if people fancy. We can decide at the bottom of the big descent after Mordor.

I'm probably going to ride out there over the tops if any of the Tod/Walsden crowd are coming and fancy a bit extra...

Any more takers?

The view from the top will be magnificent this evening. Dark Peak/Manchester to the south, 3 Peaks to the north, Isle of Man to the west, Urals to the east and the moon straight up.

Well that was eventful. There were people scattered everywhere. Although I think we just about snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. 21 (that right?) is a record this year. Maybe we should do the CB radio thing that's often been talked about when we're expecting those numbers?

That's not a terrible idea. I was on a ride recently where we were lost and having a guy scout ahead with a radio made a massive difference.

Great run that tonight! Perfect conditions! Managing to get to the top of the first climb like a bunch of refugees - the furst climb - is going some even for us

Got some lovely shots though. I'll post them up tomorrow

Just to add to the list of fun stuff that occurred on this ride, we stopped an incipient moorland fire on the way home, with a portable pressure washer.

Driving out of Newhey over to Denshaw I spotted a fair sized patch of flames on the side of the road, so we jumped out and tried to stamp it down. It was all dry grass and peat and it flared up, so Rik called it in to 999, who sent a fire engine straight out. In the meantime I remembered the pressure washer in the back of the van, and used it to put the fire out. Then we spotted a bigger, second one a bit further back down the road, so we drove down and put that one out too. By the time the firemen arrived we'd got it pretty much sorted, although a couple of bits were still smouldering away so they finished the job off for us... 😀

Interesting end to an interesting ride!

[edit]On second thoughts I'll delete the photo of the "hunky fireman" as I may want to open the thread up at work and it would be too difficult to explain.[/edit]

The moors behind Peel Tower were on fire last week too. Its staggering to think that people are doing this deliberately.

Anyhooo..... heres some piccies from last night.

I think there's a chance these fires were started on purpose. There was a bloke sat in his car just down from the second one we put out, he drove off with some story about 'talking to his missus' when we rolled up, and acted surprised when we pointed out that there was a fire burning away right in front of him. Gave his reg to the firemen just in case.

Nice pics Binners, was beautiful out. 🙂
