Bit of a surprise when fitting new grips the other day. No I haven't ridden it into the canal at any point.

From about 1.5 grips' length inwards, the middle section was covered in a layer about 2mm of greyish/bluish/greenish mold. Only noticed it when I pointed a torch down there to see if I'd left a paper with my address in there.

I brushed it all out easily enough using an old toothbrush jammed into a thin plastic pipe, sprayed isopropyl alcohol down there, brushed more. Perhaps 3 cm^3 of this fluffy stuff came out.

The bar is aluminium from a good brand, and had been fitted new a year ago. Lock-on grips with built-in ends. Same thing I've run for years, same washing regime, same indoor storage.

Can't really think how this happened. All that was in there was a post-it note, maybe some alu filings from cutting the bar, and air. I think some moisture have made its way in as the note was ever so slightly damp and stuck to the tube wall, I had to scrape it out with a pick. Never had a damp note in a bar before let alone mold.

Anyone had similar or can offer an explanation?

I'm just curious why you put a note in. It's not like anyone's going to see that unless they know to look... evidence it's yours in case it's stolen and recovered?

As for the mould (😉), I guess the damp mixed with whatever spores were on the paper or the glue of the post-it.

Perhaps it included a map of a certain part of north-east Wales?

Yes, additional evidence.

I did check the spelling but didn't realise there was a US one!

It was a non genuine postit, I remeber my previous pack was genuine. Glue probably made with boiled horses.
