How old/fit is Jnr?
I've walked that section of the SUW a few years back there is a brillinat bothy halfway along. My mates were walking to the end but I was only doing the weekend so i carried a full curry including starters for 3, 2 litres of port and cheeses.
Thought it would make a good ride especially the bit in the photo above
Over Pawhope Bothy

Google it, there are a few different routes and loads of pics"...
I used to walk it, and many of the places around there, before I was into cycling, 25 years ago
From Loch Fell, on a good day, you could see the power station on the Solway Firth, 60 miles away
Cheers once again guys .my sons nearly 12 .hes's fairly fit and got good bike skills .like the sound of the bothy could make an adventure of it .
there used to be a foto in Tibbie Shiels Inn of ice climbing on the Grey Mare's Tail
"fairly fit and got good bike skills ." Not a lot of skill required, more stamina
