Anyone know the rough figure to replace a headtube in a steel frame?
I have an old Saracen Zen 631 frame designed for 140mm forks that I would like modifying to handle a 120mm fork.
Currently the angles are a bit too steep to just use a shorter fork so wondering if its possible to adapt the frame? The BB height and seat angle feel OK with shorter forks just the front end feels very twitchy.
You could just replace the headset with a Works 1 deg slackening one, that'll give it the same HA as with a 140mm fork.
Look up Argos' website for pricing on a new head tube, if you want the angles changing that would cost more.
My guess £200 ish all in inc respray.
You could just reduce the travel! Never seen why folk use short forks, other than weight on the racey stuff, which IME is so flexy as to be useless!
Get your ruler out and measure 20mm. It's not really much. Not sure that I'd really notice the difference.
Axle to crown height on different forks can +/- some of that anyway.
If you really must change the angle to use a shorter fork, that Works slackening headset would do the trick.

Ah, good suggestion, I thought these only work with newer tapered head tubes but from a quick look appears I they have one that might work for older straight tubes with external headset cups.

How do you reduce the travel on a fork without effecting the axle to crown height?

I used to use it with a U-turn fork 150-120mm and could tell difference between 140mm and 120mm hence this thread.
sorry smokey but those cups are EC44 compatible only. my frame is EC34 (need to double check)
