Okay, so apologies if this has been done before. I did a few forum searched and couldn't find anything...

Anyway, does anyone know if it is possible to fit modern folding tyres to old rims? To pick an example entirely at random - 2.1 advantages or nobby nics to 1992 Specialized Rockhopper rims? I haven't got the bike yet so can't try, but wondering whether I need to order some wire bead versions or not.

Thanks in advance!

shoudl be fine, generally but you need to make sure you don't buy tyres that are too fat for the rims and that you run them at resonable pressures.

2.1's should be ok, though.

Thanks, when I pick the old bird up on Monday I'll try fitting my Mud X 2.0s I think, see how it goes!

As long at the tyres and rims are the same diameter then it'll be fine. I've had Kevlar beaded tyres on all sorts of rims.

I had Bonty mud X's 2.0 (front and 1.8 rear) on a 317 and 521 with no problems whatsoever.

I'd hardly say 317 and 521 are even remotely old skool.

And it's not as though kevlar folding tyres are even new. We had them waaaay back in 1992 you know, son. 😉

Yeah, you'll have no problems with this. Best upgrade you can make to a retro mtb is modern rubber ~ works so much better than the old stuff!
