I know there isn't much I can do, but just having a moan.

My Shimano xc51n have split /failed at the stitching. Just over 2 years old, rest of the shoe in good condition.

Have put some tape on the inside for the time being

On a related note - why is it so hard to find shoes that DON'T have mesh/perforated toe box

both shoes?

My diadora tornados split along the sole/upper interface almost simultaneously. I was wondering whether I had done something wrong like washing them at a high temp by mistake

i just retired 10 year old MT41s touring shoes that have ridden round new zealand  , down the  east coast of austrailia  , Round BC and down Alberta. and years of commuting too and from work.

The sole finally came off while hiking through the chalamain gap.

MY moan is i cant find anything to replace them . the  direct replacement is bright red 🙁

Same issue here with AM51 and M088...

... that is a shame as rest of the shoes in very good condition.

why is it so hard to find shoes that DON’T have mesh/perforated toe box

Not really...

Now using Louis Garneau HRS-90, no mesh on the called area.

Cheers!

I.

You wash your shoes?

Hell yes, inside a pillow bag surrounded by towels. I'm totally OCD about my bike and gear

as with every thing , the more you wash it the more worn out it gets.

I knock the worst of the mud off , get them dried quickly and then knock/brush  the rest of the mud off.

I know it's pretty annoying, but 2 years mountain biking out of relatively cheap plastic shoes isn't that bad.

Giro Terraduro don't have mesh uppers.

I like that XC51 shoe, and have also had some split like that. They don't have great longevity IME - at least if you're wearing it for all of your riding then 2 years is about normal IME before stitching starts to go. As nickc says - it's not too bad for the price  - my last pair were £60 from Evans IIRC.

You wash your shoes?

In the winter, yes, but using a pressure washer or hose outside (depending on what's being used to clean the bikes) and normally with me stood in them! I have a super-warm boiler room to dry them too - without this, shoes take weeks to dry in winter. That's why they're called Five Tens - 'cos if you get them wet, they'll take five to ten days to dry...

I wouldn't put shoes in the washing machine - far too aggressive and likely to kill either the shoes or the machine.

Threads like this remind me that I'm not ready for winter conditions yet... :-/

Stormsure or Seamgrip will work as a repair and outlast the rest of the shoe.

Youll probably notice it less if you put some socks on 😉

Lol @nickdavies.

Shimano seem to have changed their range and don't seem to have anything similar.

Will have a look at Giro terraduro.
