Is this Ok? Will It work, surely if they are both the same manufacturer it will work?

Yes, so long as they are both either 10 or 8/9 speed. You can't mix 10 and 9 speed mountian bike stuff even if it is all shimano as the cable pull ratio is different.

yep mixed XTR mechs and Deore shifters, eventually i'll get round to some better shifters, but the combo works fine, so can't justify the expense

Yeah, it's all good. Brian Lopes runs SLX/Deore shifters with XTR and Saint as he prefers that they single shift with each lever throw.
